Price fixing on mountain bikes ????

Well if you want something right now be prepared to pay the list price! Also schoolboy error only having one bike. Do what I, and others including my wife, do and have a fleet. Never short of a bike then and allows you to buy at leisure and get great savings. The money saved can go on more bicycles... :D

Errr, We only need one bike each, and only want one each.... Anymore is a waste of money, can only ride one at a time ;)....

To other comments, it is price fixing, and it's illegal, google it !!!!

Even if there is price fixing by the suppliers, I still don't believe that bike shops would discount if much at all from the RRP because there isn't the margin there. Bikes are expensive and if you are buying something that isn't a Halfords special, you either need it, or you don't, so people will pay that and many shops will offer a discount on other items as an incentive to buy from them, which is pretty reasonable.

I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, you can moan to trading standards all you like, you aren't going to be getting bikes cheaper anytime soon.

The only real way to get a decent discount on a bike is to use a cycle scheme.

Check out www.paulscycles.co.uk - I got my GT Zaskar Carbon from there for £1299 - about £800 off of the original RRP. They sell previous years models hence the hefty discounts, buying a current year model with a push bike is pretty ridiculous as there's not really any breakthroughs in cycling technology year on year!

you work in the bike trade do you ?

as that comment is a load of absolute rubbish......

the last few years have seen major advancement in bike design and componentry so 5 yrs ago i would have agreed with your statement but certainly not now...

my Giant anthem for example compared to last year has a few significant changes,

from 30spd down to the "in fashion" 20 speed double chainset that i really like

from overdrive to overdrive 2 headset stiffingingup the front end

new 2012 avid elixer 7s instead of the older trouble prone 2011 elixer 7s

the new 2012 Xt groupset instead of the older 4 yr old style xt goupset

I'd argue that those are largely improvements to components from individual manufacturers who Giant use to build their bikes. It's a natural progression as with anything, rather than a breakthrough in cycling technology.

Like I said in an earlier post, it's lucky at the moment to get the same model without a downgrade in components for a higher price.

The real breakthroughs happening in cycling technology at the moment tend to be with things like the electrically operated gear systems. These are all on high end bikes though, due to the expense.

Happens with loads of stuff this.

I bought a Shure microphone not so long ago. Ended up buying fake at first from the jungle marketplace. I got a refund etc, but was told by Shure themselves, during the course of ascertaining the bonafidity of the fake, that one way to tell if you're likely buying fake is that it's being sold below RRP. Part of their authorised dealer contract prohibits unauthorised discounting.
