So im 16, 17 in May and have figured its too expensive to get a car for now, so decided that i'd like to get a bike.

Thing is, I know nout when it comes to the two wheelers.

How much ruffly would it cost to learn, insure, purchase etc. in total for a first bike??

I dont particurly want a 'ped, unless getting a bike is still too expensive.

I am simply looking for something to get me around (and that can actually go on the motorway). Nothing flashy or fast.

Help is appreciated :)

My first 125 prices went like this....

Bike - 1300 for a Sachs XTC 125
Insurance - 270 for the year.. no license or ncb (never ridden before)
Tax was 15quid a year or something equally daft.

Helment - 150
Jacket - 100
Trousers - 100
Gloves - 30
Boots - 100

Pretty much 500quid for basic textile kit.
You can improve it as you go on.

Petrol on a 125 4 Stroke is not an issue (130mpg+)

I am 19 and am just doing the exact same thing (although i have a driving license and car already).

Now if you want to go on motorways, your going to need to do the full test, so CBT, theory, Mod1, Mod2.

Since your 19 when you pass all of this you can buy any bike, but it must be restricted to 33bhp or under.

Theory is 31 pounds.
CBT will depend, expect to pay around 100 upwards if your using the instructors bike.
MOD1 is 15 pounds, MOD2 is 75 pounds.

So all together WITHOUT training, your looking at around 225.

I am paying 600 for a 5day course including test fees. So thats around 500 pounds of training.

So around 825 pounds, without buying a bike, getting it insured, and tax if needed.

If you book CBT and training and tests etc together, you may be able to get it cheaper!

Hope this helps.

What would I not be able to do if I was to simply do a CBT?

Because I think I could hack only local travelling for a year or so, therefore the motorway thing wouldnt be a biggie.

If you got a CBT, you can own a bike up to a max of 125 cc, with no more then around 14bhp i believe.

You also cant go on the motorway, or carry a passenger!

After I did my CBT I got a Honda CBF 125, restricted to 15bhp.

I could do over 300 miles for £10. I could get up to 70mph, assuming I wasn't going up hill or into a strong wind ;)

With "L" plates you wouldn't be able to go on motorways or carry a pillion passenger.

For me, It was pretty cheap to start, bought a new yam 125 for £2100.

Deposit was £99 and the insurance was £330 (Third part, fire and theft)

The CBT was thrown in free with the bike!

I didn't think I would fail the CBT so I wasn't worried about getting the bike before hand

jackets, trousers, gloves, boots all good to get second hand. get a new helmet and try it on for a while first.

my bike gs125 cost £500
