Printing over network between windows 7 64 bit and XP

I have a printer attached to a pc and another pc in the house which I used to be able to print from when both Pcs were running windows XP.

I have just upgraded the pc with the printer attached to windows 7 64bit pro and now I can't print from the other pc across the network.

Printer is HP 1022. I can see the printer on the other pc but when I print it crashed word/IE (What ever I am printing from) and dosent print.

Do I need to install 32bit drivers on the windows 7 64bit machine under additional drivers in the printers properties?

Adding the 32 bit drivers just makes them available for the 32 bit machine to download & install. The 64 bit machine won't use them directly.

Have you made sure that the 32 bit machine is using up to date drivers?

Does the printer have a built-in network print server, or would you be willing to spend about £25 getting an external one? If so I’d have the two machines independently connecting to the printer over the network and save yourself some hassle.

on the host pc, make a note of the full share path ie \\pc\printshare

on the client pc, install the printer as a local printer. When it asks the port, select standard port and put in the UNC path from above ie \\pc\printshare. Then install the drivers if needed

I find this way the client does not check the host for what driver to use and just used the one you tell it to. Stops a lot of issues going from sharing a printer with a mix of 32/64 OS

I'll give that a go thanks

The printer dosent have a network cable input so guessing it dosent have a network print server? I'm not familiar with these, can you get a wifi print server?

For a wireless print server have a look at the TP-Link TL-WPS510U. They also do a cheaper wired one TL-PS110U. Your printer is on the compatibility list for them both.

Similar kit is available from all the usual suspects.

You should add the printer on the windows 7 machine directly. Do not share it through another client.

Go to new printer and then add local printer, go to port, check tcp/ip port, then input the ip address of the printer. Download and use the windows 7 32/64 bit drivers. done.

This rather presupposes that the OP’s printer is connected via a network print server, which it isn’t.
