Private Hire Vehicles

Saw one today, where the private hire license plate didn't match the car it was on.

The car was a green Passat on an 05 plate and the plate he had listed a blue Passat on an 06 plate.

What would be the implications to the driver if I were to report that to the council? Would they even do anything do you reckon?

Or have I totally mistaken how those plates are meant to work?

I have seen that before on another taxi when I was in a taxi. The driver said the council can sometimes take ages to issue tha plates or something.

The Council would not be happy about drivers misrepresenting unplated vehicles and would probably have the driver in front of the licencing committee for it.

A mate of mine keeps a couple of cars plated which he rents out to taxi drivers when their cars are being serviced or break down or are waiting for plates etc. He makes quite good money out of it.

could driving on these fake/illegitimate plates not have serious legal ramifications/difficulties if an accident was to occur?

I find it odd how my eyes seem to always double check the plate and reg on taxis at traffic lights! If only the 5-0 were as vigilant!
