The FTO currently wears M5 xxx, I have all the MOT's from import and it originally had M892 xxx.

The log books states 'date of first registration : 27 05 1998' ' date of first registration in the UK : 27 05 1998'

The car is a 95 as far as I can tell, the seatbelts show 95 and the chassis number is from the 95 pool.

My GF really wants a new plate, but it is an N.

I'm sure you could have a 95 N, I say this because you can have a 96 P but you can also have a 97 P (the BMW is 97 P) so I assume there are 95 and 96 N's.

So what can we fit? Do you think we could fit an N?
I guess the DVLA figured 95 from somewhere because the original plate was M, but the log book says 98?

S'all a bit confusing! :p I know I need to ring the DVLA, but I'm wondering how far I can argue with them...

Your car was indeed first registered in 1998, this will be presumably when it was imported. However, as it was an import, it will have been declared manufactured on a certain date.

Given the original plate was M892 XXX and you say its a 95, it will have been manufactered between 1st January and 31st July 1995. This means it can only carry an M registration or older.

No N plate for you :p

Buy a private plate you tightwad.
I think that's what he's after. The private plate his GF wants is N xx xxx or something. Thats the problem. You cant make a car look newer than it is.

I thought it was "date of first registration" (anywhere in the world) not date of manufacture that counted?

Not for used imports.

Otherwise most of the FTO's and Impreza WRX's in this country would be running around on W-02 plates..

I meant a 'proper' private number, with a couple of letters and numbers. ;)

How late did they build P1s then? I saw one on an 03 or a 53 plate not long ago.

End of the Classic shape, but many of them were unsold and Subaru dealers had a devils own job getting rid of them.

Sometimes, as well, the DVLA make errors. There is a 53 plate MY95 Impreza Turbo around here.

there is a G plate brooklands capri somewhere in the UK too.
buyers that know their car will become a classic (and can afford to do so) can buy but not register the car for as long as they see fit making it worth more than equivalent models.

Ah I'm bloody blind. Front cover of log book in a comments box ' Estimated Date of Manuf 1995' I was hoping to play on the fact the DVLA won't really have a clue, other than what they were told because its Jap.

This is as much as 'real' plate as any one is. It makes her first name and surname initial with no spare characters (5 in total). All we have to do is make a 6 or 9 into a G. (Chinese, so there are still 'good' plates out there) I would say what it is, but if it goes on the 0.01% chance I post it here, I'll be mad :o

She really wants it so it looks like the BMW might have to wear it for now

Cheers
