My PC is running like a dog these days, some issues when I turn it on and it will take several minutes and reboot during the process (it like gets stuck at POST).. randomly wakes up from sleep etc...

I generally just do Lightroom/Photoshop work these days with casual gaming though feel like more RAM could be handy...

I currently have: Intel Core i5-3570K, GIGABYTE Z77-D3H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 and 8GB of Corsair DDR3-1600 RAM.

The RAM and CPU were both purchased in 2012 and the GPU is the newest component which was December 2015. I suppose I should replace the mobo/CPU and RAM at the same time as imagine one of them is causing me issues. Not interested in upgrading my graphics card.

I wouldn't really want to spend more than £400 but hardware seems rather expensive these days , especially if I want 16GB RAM.

Any help greatly appreciated as I haven't got a clue about any HW these days :)!

yup. go used. esp as you have mm access.
buy a 3770k for a straight drop in (then overclock) and sell the 3570k
extra 8gb ddr3 ram (total 16gb)
and 240gb (or even better a 480gb) ssd

on mm should be less than £200 outlay after selling your 3570k
