Probably wrong thread to ask... Anyone else NOT have a phone?

While I can see your point of view - for this reason I don't have push mail, facebook/social apps, etc. configured, unknown numbers are auto rejected, I visit the sites or manually fetch stuff, if anyone gets pushy about me not responding immediatly when they try to call or text me they don't get a very polite reply - I find having a smartphone there 24x7 and mobile internet really handy.

I cant stand being without my smartphone for even a second outdoors.

When I go to bed, I put my phone on loud. Even popping out for a 3 minute cigarette, I pocket my phone before I grab the fags. Once I was running late for work, had already left, noticed phone missing, went all the way back to get it.

Seriously though, what if you're outdoors and a mate wants to meet up with you? What if you're running late to meet a mate? What if you're passing through a friend's neighbourhood and want to ask if they want to have a smoke/chat with you? What if someone needs your assistance, or you need theirs? What if someone's in trouble or you're in trouble?...
All these things and more happen on a daily basis for me, therefore, contrary to your experience of phones, life without a phone would be utterly hellish for me.

I think one of the reasons I am so extreme to the point of putting my phone on loud before I go to bed is that my dad would probably still be alive If he had a mobile phone that day.

No, not really.

I know of a few people who own mobile phones, and don't really use them.

there is no comparison between someone that owns a mobile phone and does not really use it and someone who refuses to won one because they hate the idea of people contacting them!

I think it's a bit odd really.

As I said, I can understand someone not wanting a smartphone or any of the fancy features, but a basic one is essentially free to own and you can even contact the emergency services without a SIM card inside, so the 'I don't want to be available' argument holds no weight either. Some of them are tiny, as well, so it's not as if they are a burden to carry.

It could save someone's life - perhaps even your own - it's irresponsible not to have one.

so you carry a full medical kit and several mobiles on different networks for the same reason? (different networks incase you are in a black spot for one)...

Emergency services lets you use any network, so if one is available, you can use it. A SIM isn't even required.

A tiny phone is hardly the same as a full medical kit, and the former is arguably more useful as well...

Got rid of mine a long time ago.

The idea of being "connected" / "Available" all day, every day is just hell.

Smartphones only made it "worse" as then you had emails/social feeds to contend with too. I appreciate this is all "voluntary" but it is often "expected".

I personally found them to be an expense I could not justify.

I am now connected at home and disconnected when away from home which works perfectly.

Luckily, I work from home which may have something to do with it.

I appreciate what I am saying is probably heresy to some but no offence intended.

Obviously, some people NEED their phones which is understandable, just wondered if there were others like myself?

So what happens when you are away from your wife, and she needs to get hold of you in an emergency?

Actually most Western countries require you to have a first aid kit in your car and most UK cars come equipped with one. :) If I could find a full medical kit that was the size of a tiny mobile phone then I probably would carry one about everywhere actually. And a mobile is probably more useful in an emergency if anything.

As Robbo says emergency calls will be routed over any network available no matter what SIM card you have/don't have at all.
