Just got a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 G-Force 160GB 7200RPM SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (ST9160823ASG) and put it in my laptop attached to the secong sata channel - fired the laptop up and there were some clicking noises followed by intermitent squeaks! The laptop bios failed to see the drive and after a minute or so in BIOS the machine hung ...

tried again a few times - same result (of course!)
removed the original hdd - same result
moved the new drive to the other sata channel - same result
put it in my main pc - some squeaks but windows failed to see the drive
put it in an older pc - same result initially but I noticed that hdtune could see it so I ran the benchmark test and i got a graph that pretty much reflected what I expected to see! Played a bit more with it and windows xp recognised it and I set up a volume on it ... but xp now fails to format the disk whilst the drive 'squeaks' some more

Most of the above is with the Jumper set to default (ie, SATA I) Trying the SATA II setting made no difference.

I am now assuming that this drive is goosed and its going back :(

Certainly sounds that way. You could try running the Seagate diagnostics from the older machine, if only just to say you've run them if they ask as part of the RMA process. I doubt they'll say much though.

Now I can see it on the laptop too (strange behaviour in that it took a few goes to get this far even!) but a SeaTools scan says there are 99 errors up to lba 77395 and it quit at that point ...
