Hi,

I have a spare room in my loft space that has a wall about 3m wide (before the ceiling curves down with the roof line) and want to put a projector in there.

I could stretch to a Sony VW40ES at the very top end, or have also seen the Epson TW6600 which looks good for the money. Recently I have been wondering whether to go in lower and ensure it gets used first though. I have seen the BenQ 1070+ which seems to review very well for the price, if I use it a lot I can probably sell it on for a £200 or so hit and upgrade. Is it the best model for the price or am I really going to regret going low end? I have a Sony 55" W905 in the lounge and have been 'spoilt' by motionflow and decent blacks but will the BenQ look bad?

Also any recommendations for screens, think I am looking at 100" or so at 16:9? I will be sat about 15ft away but I think that's the biggest the wall will take.

Any other general advice appreciated!

my noobie experience was that i couldn't maximise the space i wanted because the throw(?) of the cheap projector i bought wasn't good enough (or rather my room wasn't long enough) and so i had to "settle" for a 100" screen when i could have done 130" on the wall.

The below link helps determine how far away it needs to be for a given dimension, in the case of 3m wide you would need to have the PJ 3.5-4.5m away. Also, the more permanent you can make the install the more you will use it!

In terms of other specs, go as high as your budget will allow - pretty stadard fare, my cheapo 720p Optoma H180x was bought to test the concept and i'd like to upgrade but tbh, only upto 1080p and a faster colour wheel, otherwise it's the the sixe of the screen that really impresses.

I got the Benq 1070 because I wanted to test it out for 1-2 yrs before investing in something more substantial. I have to say I am extremely impressed with the picture quality!
I have 125" screen and sit about 13-14ft away.

Nice! Reading around I think you have to spend about 2k to get significantly better. Think I'll go for the Benq. The + model doesn't seem much more so will try that out.

Any issues with it on panning with judder etc. ? I hear it doesn't have any frame interpolation...

Any advice RE screen? I would prefer fixed, don't want to spend a fortune but aware of the importance of getting it right!

I did a load of reading on screens etc and found everyone recommended the Silver Ticket Screen (my 125" was $249 delivered) and have to say partnered up with the Benq I am more than happy. The next step for me will be a $2.5-3k projector and I honestly don't think it'll happen any time soon as I love mine so far.
That and the awesome sound system I partnered it with :D

- I have not seen any issues with the screen as yet.

The right screen can really transform the projector experience.

Have to say I went from a relatively cheap Optoma HD70 (1280x720) through a few higher end projectors before pulling the HD70 back out again - it does a great job and just not enough content that is really high enough definition to justify the money I was spending on more expensive models (might be a little different now - though even stuff like netflix HD doesn't suffer on it) but at the time even blu-rays were mostly transfers with only ~800p worth of actual resolution.

I've also been reading up and the silver ticket seem popular. Where did you get yours from clipsey?

I have decided that if I get the BenQ I'll have some cash around for some decent front end speakers (second hand 1k buys a lot!) so it's happening.

Gonna get the + model. Seems slightly better from reviews and price difference not much.

I got mine from amazon.
Then I purchased surround sound speakers from Fluance (absolutely amazed with these) and partnered them up with an SVS sub. Completely blows you away!

Edit: FYI I moved to the States several years ago and hence why I bought what I did. Hopefully you can still purchase it over in England.
