SCEE boss David Reeves talks exclusively to mcvuk.com

The console was launched on March 23rd and has sailed past the one million milestone in Europe and other PAL territories in under ten weeks.

That was faster than both PS2 and PSOne. And I think that the analysts out there will also realise that it’s faster than our brothers and sisters in the competitive world.

Spin.

David Reeves, SCEE president, chose MCV to stress that the figure is for sell-through rather than sell-in and hugely impressive in a historical context. “Early last week we went through the one million mark on PS3. And we did that in nine and a half weeks,” he confirmed

So sold to retail.

Then...

So 1,000,000 sold

600,000 launch week (according to Sony)
120,000 second week (80% drop in the UK extrapolated across Europe)

Leaves 280,000 sold in the last 8 weeks

=35,000 per week

Not that impressive. The largest launch quantity ever didn't sell out followed by 8 weeks of mediocre sales.

Well, Sony did push a lot more consoles out than it ever did in the same time period with the PS/PS2, just because it didn't sell out but still managed to sell more than the PS2 shows this.
I really hope that Sony will start looking at sales figures and stop treating us like we're not the main market.

Well they did have 4 more months to up production.

Europeans are stupid. Sony charged so much over here because they knew we would all lap it up and buy it regardless of cost. Well played Sony :)

I wonder what nintendo would have sold if their Wii's were not STILL sold out?

jeez a lot of you can not wait to put a negative spin on anything sony. I tell you what lets have a market dominated by microsoft and see what fun it will be then.

Maybe people would be more pro-sony if they sorted themselves out and stopped overcharging us... I can't believe how much we get ripped off compared to the rest of the world.

They have the potential to sell so much more but their crappy marketing and crazy pricing keeps them behind.

Actually wii is pretty much on par with the 360 in terms of market share. It's sold over 8 Million since christmas. It's selling much much faster than either the 360 or ps3. So it wouldn't be m$ dominated. Sonys problem is they cut corners and increase costs.

Maybe you should read up on how much the equivalent cost of Wii, X360, DS etc. is in the US and Japan ;)

Japan had a 20% exclusive drop on the ps3 if you remember so the equivilent cost there is less. ;) Still I would bet in the us it is relativley cheaper. I don't know what the average wage in the usa is but I bet if you compare the uk avg wage and us avg wage the ps3 would be more expensive here, espically if you consider high living costs here due to rocketing house prices.

How cute. Sony knew what they were doing and it was great business. They couldn't get away with it in the US or Japan though as they aren't as pro-sony as Europe.

And we wonder why Sony continues to treat the European market poorly.

Seems we're gluttons for punishment..

As opposed to Microsoft who charge us double for our games compared to South Korea/Japan or Nintendo who release games like Paper Mario many months after North America.

All of the console manufacturers treat Europe poorly.

This doesn't start & end with Sony, the UK seem to get hit in the pocket for most things nowadays  compared with most other countries

sony cant change our taxes and consumer rights/laws etc

neither can nintendo or ms whos consoles are 70 quid cheaper in usa due to the dollar been so weak , problem with there consoles is that people dont even consider importing them because of potential region locks :(

the uk and europe is just a rip off basically its nothing sonys done, infact im pretty sure they'd of made it as cheap as they can to try and get some decent sales

i ride bikes , i could buy a bike frame here for 300 quid , the exact same frame is just over 300 dollars in the usa  :(

is it because they're made over there ? no cos its made in Taiwan or somewhere :(

yes its all the other silly stuff that european trading laws etc add on

its 100 quid more over here yes

the other consoles are still 70/80 quid more

they're hardly having our eyes out

as i said im sure they've sold it as cheap as they can .i just fail too see why o they would purposefully rip us off when they're reportedly so desperate for sales
