PS3 Fans kicking in?

Nope.
It's not normal. If your PS3 is in a confined space, move it so it can get some air. If that doesn't help, i'd be taking it back to where you got it from if i were you.

Well im just going by my own expirience. I have never heard my fans increase speed, no matter what im doing.

I'd be a little worried if the Active cooling never did anything, but then i would probably never notice if i didn't think about it either.
Mine only speeds up when i play games for awhile, like most the day last week i played GRAW2 (which i liked!) and didn't notice till i exited how loud it got.

Try doing that PS3 fan test to see if it clears the problem. Just google it though as I'm too lazy to find the link. 
When I first got mine it seemed to ramp up the fans quite frequently after playing something like Drakes Fortune for half an hour. It's settled down since then though, and only maxes out when it first starts folding or has been playing a game and then is asked to do something more intense (like playing GT5P for an hour and then watching a 'busy' replay). One thing I did notice is that the fans tend to increase a little if you are downloading something, and playing a game at the same time.
I think if you leave it idle in the XMB for 15 minutes or so, and the console is still virtually silent, then there isn't a problem.

Mine use to do it randomly when watching a DVD, not so much anymore.

has everyone tryed the fan test thing , i would like to know if i should do it , ive had my ps3 for about 3 months is it worth a go?

Do the 40GB PS3 fan test, see how loud your ps3 goes:
Turn the ps3 on via the switch at the front, wait, turn it off at the front
Turn the switch off on the back of the ps3
Hold your finger on the eject button on the front, then turn the switch on at the back, the ps3 will beep and then release your finger off the eject button when the fan comes on.
Wait about a minute, the ps3 will beep 3 times when the fan test has finished and the light on the front will flash red.
Turn it off at the back
Turn it on at the back
It is now normal again hope you enjoy seeing how loud the ps3 really is!

i think xbox will be in the dust this year as last year they were so confident when ps3 did sell well but now more games coming out on ps3 and they are bit cheaper and going to go down even more as i seen somewhere already that ps3 outsold xbox360 for this month.
