hey peeps,
ive been offered a new ps3 from a guy coming back from australia....hes looking for £250.00.... not bad methinks :)
im just wondering what i need to be aware of??? i know the games are region free so thats no hassle and i take it that the warranty will be void (must be shops who can fix ps3's? in case it arises)
is there anything else to consider in regards to imported ps3s?
any help/advice appreciated

please dont flame this thread with anti ps3 comments as im a very proud xbox owner aswell and was considering a ps3 when the price came down..
cheers,
steve.

I've had an import for a while and had no problems. You will need a standard UK PC kettle lead and then stick a 3a fuse in it, so no need for voltage converters and alike.

What region is Aus - aren't they PAL as well?

Yes they're PAL so PS2 games won't be a problem. Obviously PS3 games are region-free anyway. Australia is DVD region 4 so you won't be able to play UK DVDs on it. However, they're also region B for Blu-ray so UK Blu-ray movies will play fine.

you might actually be able to play UK DVDs on it - I was surprised to see my UK PS3 plays my OZ DVDs which are Region 4 - I don't think they made them in Region2.

A LOT of region 2 DVDs are actually region 2 & 4, and vice versa. Sometimes it's written on the box, sometimes it isn't. DVD softaware will tell you.

My friend has an Oz PS3 and has no issues with it over here, although as stated I think all the DVDs we've tried were DVD region 2+4.

as for the dvds is the ps3 actually region locked for them ?

also ours played a nero written dvd wich i wasnt expecting as the ps2 never would play them

Yes, it is region locked.

Was there a reason why they region lock for films but not games???

I guess canada is a different region from the UK, I can pick up a PS3 off the highstreet for just under 300 pounds with game and I'm slightly tempted!!!

Isnt it something along the lines that many dvd's require some region to actually be stated (and if no region is present then they wont play)

For bluray its the opposite - and many uk and us (film) discs just dont have any region coding at all (and as stated I dont think games ever will)

DVDs can also have Region 0 on them too which means that they will play regardless of the region locking of your DVD player IIRC
