So i was reading the PS3Forums the other day when i saw a thread about some 'insider' with lots of new, almost unbelievable information about the PS3 (and PSP). Here's what he had to say, lots of new info

There was little reason to believe anything he said at first, but then some of the things he said were actually confirmed just days later.

A new PSP entertainment pack is coming next month. It costs $250 and includes a 1GB MSPD, ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin Trails (game), and Lords of Dogtown (movie). No headphones.

News article from today confirming this: link

To give you an idea of the implications, Resistance: Fall of Man is currently 20GB, and is expected to ship at around 35GB

This was confirmed to be true (well a couple of GB's out) after the article was made, with the current build of Resistance at 22GB. link

The system actually checks distances, atmospheric density, wind, what materials the sound is bouncing off and passing through, etc, and modifies the base sound accordingly

-Another piece of information about Resistance, again backed up by the MTV article:
He noted the metal-on-metal ping as the hedgehog hit steel and said a different sound would have triggered if it tapped wood

He also mentioned something about one of the weapons in Resistance:

For example, there's this energy-burst weapon that just passes through solid matter.

This in-game weapon was shown off in a video, about the same time as the MTV article was released IIRC. I watched the video myself, the weapon does indeed shoot through walls.

Then another small bit of info, not sure if this is new though -

There is also support for 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 sound setups

Just confirmed that Insomniac is now working hard at using 7.1 in one of it's games. (no link for that one sorry)

Some of the other stuff he says (especially about Blu-ray, Oblivion and Killzone) seem very unbelievable though, which left me feeling skeptical. We'll know for sure soon enough, but still interesting. Your views on this?

The first reply to his post was pretty much what I was thinking... Still, guess you can't discredit something just because of the way it is written.

Will wait and see I guess.

I like the whole idea of PSP/PS3 link-ups, would be pretty cool.

As far as textures go i call BS. Yes, the game might ship with 'ultra gazinga high res textures' but as far as i am aware the console only has 256MB of video memory. Textures will constantly be being swapped in and out of use making the slowest component the most used. Go go efficiency!

Reading through more if it, I also do not believe the original post was constructed by the same person. The first few paragraphs which mention game titles and other stuff make him sound no more than some dumb kid who is beta testing and cant keep his mouth shut. Plenty of swearing and rubbish sentence construction. Then he suddenly becomes a true salesman and all the bad language evaporates and the console becomes the holy grail, whereby all points come down to how simply poor the 360 is. Then we get some swearing again. Its almost as if this thing was copied and pasted together.

To give you an example:

Reports of cell yields and HDMI 1.3 available have absolutely no impact on the production process. The cell has naturally lower yields due to the fact that it’s a new and more powerful technology.

from the same person who brough you

Remember when I was talking about the 360s disc capacity and how it ****** up Oblivion? Some of you will remember, because I got flamed pretty hard for that (OMG it still looks great, the PC version is the same, waa waa, don’t criticizes my console). The Xbox totally ****** up Oblivion

Sales carp. Nothing more.

The textures is an interesting one. Doesnt oblivion have loads of downloadable hi rez texture mods?
If you look at the sonic video posted on here a few days ago. the 360 version looked a bit more washed out that the PS3.
That could have been settings on screen (i doubt it considering its for a comparison video) or it could just be the PS3 its a bit sharper like that.
The 360 does tend to suffer from looking a bit 'washed' no matter what connections it uses, but with VGA being the best. But even then the colours could do with being sharper, that might have nothing to do with textures though
Anyway the only way we will find out is when it comes out in November :D

It could depend on the connection though rather than the TV settings, I know there is a huge difference between the Blaze, Joytech and Official VGA connections for one...

While some parts of it are maybe true, it is full of fanboyish ravings.

As for the whole texture thing in Oblivion, there are huge flaws. The game doesn't look much worse on the 360 vs the PC, the 360 and PS3 both have the same amount of total RAM (but the 360 has more potential space for textures), and although the PS3 has loads of space for textures, the drive is slower than the DVD drive in the 360, so have vastly larger textures would kill load times.

Since they have had more time to work the PS3 version of Oblivion, it is possible they have improved a few things, like the texturing, but he is ranting like a true fan boy.

Oblivion coming to the PS3?

Last I heard the rumour was quashed: http://www.ps3news.ca/04262006/08/bethesda_shoots_down_ps3_oblivion_rumors

At present we have no announced plans to bring Oblivion to any platforms other than PC or Xbox 360. We'll certainly let folks know if that changes

Hmm the only thing which I like about the PS3 is its Blu-Ray drive. I'd love one just for backup purposes.

I think he said that the PC version was crippled so as not to outshine the xbox 360.

But the drive is read only, not much use for backups :)

It will be interesting to see exactly how the PS3 lines up, when it's eventually released as there seems to be almost no solid information on it's specs etc at the moment (Sony's announced spec's have changed a few times so I won't bet on them not changing again)

Sorry, I meant a Blu-Ray drive in general (a writer obviously).

Though. Isn't a protective coating applied after manufacture as they're inherently susceptable to scratches? How would this work on a home PC?

you can buy them already right here from OCUK lol
i dont think the coating affects the reading/writing tbh

Time to make a comment.

Random ravings from a Guy who wrote the article said:
Ok, onto the multiplayer. Sony is going all out here. Actually, the entire philosophy behind the PS3s development is “no holding back.” You may whine about the price, you may whine about the features (and those of you that do that regularly really look like huge tards, btw. You know who you are) but Sony really wanted to deliver a system with every cool feature they could think of.

But is hasn't has it:) It really hasn't. Or sony have very little imagination. True motion sensing, Vibration, ergonomic controller? And this isn't about what the 360/Wii have or don't have (they have their limitations) but its all about the PS3, no comparrisons, no bias. It really doesn't have every cool feature they could think of.

same bloke said:
Furthermore, they want to deliver a system that will survive another decade. MS may release a new Xbox every couple years, but Playstation owners know that their system isn’t going to be obsolete any time soon.

This guy is either confused or sony marketing is spin city. The stuff politicians can only dream of. The console cannot be expected to last a decade, this would be commercial suicide and would in no way fit in with the rapid developments in hardare and software or sony's 3/5 year business strategy. This is hardly a quick win scenario. If Microsoft release a new console in 2 years then it would make the PS3 obsolete, same way the 360 made the PS2 obsolete. Quite a fair statement since there was no competition for a year by sony.

I think he may be telling the truth but its hardly a earth shattering revelation. Sony are in a make or break on this one said:
Anyhoo, the online service is absolutely, positively, 100% free… no tiers, no subscription. It’s like having Xbox Live Gold, but you don’t have to pay for it. Some of the features include: multiple online IDs (not just one gamertag), friends lists, rankings and skill-based auto-matchmaking, full online profiles, EyeToy and EyeToy HD integration (photo profiles, possibly video chat).

I like the idea of this, the free online play may offset against the cost of the machines and games when compared to the 360. Infact they will have been backed into a corner on this one, as the console costs soo much more compared to the competition, charging more for additional services would be a poor strategy. I bet when the concieved the console and hadn't set the pricing or seen the pricing of the competition it will have been a cost option.

Now I happen to think that the price of the console is actually good for what it comes with. Its a fair price £450ish ~ considering its features. Infact it is blummin good value when you consider what a games pc would cost which could deliver the same performance. The problems is MS spoiled us with the 360 retail price and have effectively bought out a market share, with some seriously agressive pricing tactics that really will make for some excellent business studies student case study in a few years. Now this won't account for, or deter people from buying the PS3 but it will certainly impact on sales. What it does do though is place MS in a strong market position.

This really does deserve some respect on MSs behalf. Sony will sell the PS3 by the bucket load. The real test will be in a couple of years when MS can afford to release the next, next gen console and Sony may or may not be in the same postition. This isn't like the Wii where its all about gaming experrience but about power and raw performance.
