Hey guys

Right I know you will have questions like this posted all the time but my question is a fairly simple one.

The Xbox360 console wise is getting fairly old, I think its been out for about 2 years now? The PS3 is fairly new in comparison and being a Sony console will probebly improve with age like any new console will do.

So my question is this.... Which one has the better longetivity and potential?

I was initially going to buy a PS3 literally because its a Sony console and they have got it so right in the past with the PS1 and PS2. I dont care about blueray, nor am I particularly bothered by the internet on the consoles as the PC for me is far better for the games I like to play.

I literally want a little bit of future proofing which is probebly a stupid thing to say in the games console world!

I have a Wii currently and its basically crap, because there are no decent games avaliable..... Is the PS3 currently in this same situation? If the PS3 is I'm sure they will pull it back as it gets older.

Hope i havent dragged it on but I would appreciate peoples views on the future of these two consoles.

The answer is no-one knows. A lot of people think the PS3 has more long term potential but no-one really knows. The Ps3 is very much in the same situation as the Wii with regard to the number of good games available, but that of course will change. Although if you dont care about blu-ray then get a 360, why pay more for less games and the ones that are on both console are better on the 360 currently. Look at the games out for both console and the games coming out over the next year for both consoles and decide which lineup looks better to you.

Get both if you possibly can. They both have their pros and cons, but there's no obvious gap between the two that will compel anyone to chose one console over the other in a heartbeat.

Games wise, a quick look at Metacritic shows only one on the PS3 game averaging over 90% - Oblivion, which is a 360 Port anyway. I think the 360 has seven and the Wii has three.

As for Longevity - the success of the first two playstations was largely attributable to the number of units sold. There was a large user base to market games to. The PS3 is a distant 3rd behind the 360 and the Wii in terms of sales. Sales numbers breeds games development and at the moment developers know they are more likely to make a profit developing for the 360.

To some extent it's an artificial picture because the PS3 hasn't had a truly great exclusive game to drive sales yet but I hardly think the PS3 looks like a safe bet for the future.

EA supporting the 360 more than the PS3 is going to go quite a long way as well. EA is a lot more pivotal to a console's success than a lot would assume.

I think you can argue either is a better long term bet, but the fact is both are here to stay, and both will continue to do so..

The 360's early lead has ensured that many more software houses then previously thought are developing for the 360 (in fact a fair few seem to be using it more often as the lead platform). The PS3 still has all the big hitters as well, this time it's far more 'even' then the last gen.

Technology wise, well who knows, it's obvious that the PS3 Cell architecture is new to developers, and it's fair to say they will get better results with time, however, we also know that the RSX and other factors in the PS3 are going to hamper any marked step in game quality. The 360 is actually just about as unknown, it's still triple core'd with EDram and a few other 'features' that remain unexplored, and the dev tools are much easier to use, this should mean developers spend their time improving things and quickly trying new engines, as opposed to the PS3 being more difficult to program for and this means devs are spending more time getting stuff working limiting some of the experimentation..

That's mainly all conjecture.. I'd say both have rosy futures, despite fanboys on both sides opinions that their console will somehow rise to another level, this IMO is simply not going to happen.

do you like japanese games? go for ps3

but i prefer american games, ones with violence, and the 360 is a better console if thats what you enjoy

You're very uninformed if you believe that the Xbox360 is aging and the PS3 isn't despite the releases. PS3 is no more powerful than the Xbox360, the PS3 was released too late.

As for the situation with the Wii, it's probably better than the situation with Playstation3. It currently has very little in terms of quality, especially in comparison with Xbox360. Even the multiformat games are superior on PS3 except DiRT.

As for you're kind of games being better on PC, you must mean RTS games or flight sims yes? Because everything else has been superior on Xbox360 for a while.

interesting. it surprises me that the Wii has sold so many units when it has hardly any titles to choose from (that are worth playing). Perhaps using the units sold as a yard stick isnt a good way of saying its going to be a better choice?

The Xbox does interest me, its got plenty of good value games and the prices of which are very much in line with PC titles. However I still seem hooked on the age of the console?

I think perhaps as the prices of the PS3 fall perhaps like others have mentioned it would allow more games to be produced because there are more people out there to buy them? I remember the first playstation being released and everyone was like £500 for an unknown games console!!! You must be mad, but look at how amazing it was in the end.

Whats interesting to see is that not many points can be raised to differ either console if you remove blueray and online gaming! Obviously game avaliability is markedly different but the xbox has been out for much longer in comparison.

As for buying both, its not something I can financially see as being worthwhile. In truth the PC has always been my platform of choice. However some titles just dont transfer over as well as they do from a console and some titles simply dont make it at all!

Thats the problem, I know diddly squate really. I went into a local retailer and spoke to them about the PS3 and he talked about how it just isnt delivering.... I was very surprised to say the least!

As for the console ageing I was only talking from the point of view that the PS3 has recently been released where as the xbox 360 has been out for longer. I didnt realise that the PS3 was basically 2 years late in coming to the market to compete with the xbox which incidentally explains a lot about the salesmans points of view on the console!

360 all the way imo, its developed such a huge fanbase, devlopers are going to be concentrating mostly on that since its where the money is, and imo i personally think its more powerful, a decent powerful CPU thats easy to program for (none of that overcomplicated cell rubbish), a faster graphics card, and similar ram speed etc etc.

Dont get me wrong, the Ps3 is a good console, great realiablity and some good games on the horizon (MGS4 etc) but i think the 360 is and always will be ahead.

The only thing i reckon the 360 might fall short on is disc space, but devlopers always find ways around that :)

I don't think you realise the whole 'release' story..

The technology in both consoles is identical in 'age'.. the processor in the 360 is a custom design done at exactly the same time as the Cell..

The graphics chips are both from the exact same generation, just ATI Vs NVidia..

Sony just released the PS3 late, they where supposed to release at the same time the 360 launched, give or take a few months, but due to supposed Blu-ray laser shortages and other 'issues' it was a year late, the technology had aged a year before it was released to the public.

It's the same argument with games, many people don't realise that the PS3 launch titles where by and large developed at the same time the release titles for the 360, where as the 360 devs had better dev kit and managed to rush them out in time, the PS3 devs had not so good dev kit, but almost a year to get on top of them..

Ah yeah, that's fair enough. I wasn't having a go, I just wasn't aware of exactly where you stood. The Xbox360 and the PS3 are very even, infact it may surprise you to know that the Xbox360 is more powerful graphically with Playstation3 better at physics, but that's pretty much it.

Without the Internet or Blu-Ray it's an obvious answer from me, I'd take Xbox360 every day of the week, for me it offers by far and away (and I really mean that) the best catalogue of games, best controller and game features (Achievements). PS3 does have a multi-card reader which is a superb addition, as well as Wi-Fi (you can buy an adapter for Xbox360, or a 3rd-party bridge), but other than that it's pretty much even.

You will hear stories of Xbox360's failing, which is tru, they do, but I can only speak for myself when I say I've had more problems with PS3 (Internet and DVD Playback) than I have with Xbox360 which has cause me no hassle.

Personally, I love all 3 consoles, although I am a far bigger fan of Playstation3 and Xbox360, it would seem Sony have made a big mistake in releasing late, they were lucky that the Dreamcast didn't deliver or Sega didn't have the money when PS2 was released 12 months late, however the same can't be said of Microsoft and the Xbox360 which has most definitely capitalised on it.

If you want any, more honest answers in regards to any questions about either console feel free to e-mail me as these threads nearly always get spoiled by a select few.

buy the 360, has 3 year warrenty, can be got fairly cheaply with a massive back cat of
2nd hand games, and in 2/3 years time get the next console by MS which will no doubt make the PS3 seems like a spectrum and leaving the PS3 high and dry and hopefully MS will have learnt all the mistakes made this time round with its hardware being 3rd time lucky and all that.

360 is only 2 years old in November, PS3 is also a year old in November, it's not that big a difference really.

Indeed your right. I didnt know that technically they are on a par even though the PS3 is a year younger. bit of a muck up on sonys behalf which as I dig deeper is becoming more apparent.

Ok so if I go for the Xbox which seems very likely now do I get the newest version out i.e the elite or do I go for a simple core or premium console?

I'm thinking elite due to the HDMI connection which my TV has?
