Hi,

Was just wondering if anyone has their PS3 hooked up to SDTV, if so what is it like ? Assume that it comes with composite cables as standard ?

As personally to me on the 360 component made a huge difference.

at the moment I'm playing my PS3 on a 15" SDTV - it's not fantastically wonderful - but it's perfectly playable and still looks good.

although being honest, when I'm playing a game I'm not one of the people that studies the graphics and is like OH NOES!!! JAGGIES! I just play the games for the fun, and on SDTV the games are still fun and I've never had a problem reading text or anything.

I don't have component or scart leads - just using composite through a scart adaptor thing.

I can't wait till I have enough cash for a 2407wfp though.

For me the difference between standard composite lead and hdmi was night and day, i wouldn't have bothered buying the console it i just had a standard tv as it looks pretty similar to a ps2

Does the PS3 offer anything similar to the 360 in terms of a VGA cable? So you can hook it up to a monior or, like me have a HD TV with a VGA port?

you get hdmi->dvi cables that work with HDCP enabled monitors

or you can buy a VGA box that changes component signal to VGA.

No VGA support (atm). If you have a monitor with DVI you can use a HDMI>DVI lead (if your monitor supports HDCP). If you have VGA the only option you have is to get a VGA box. These can convert Component signals to VGA, so you could just get the PS3 Component lead.

I think these things are usually quite expensive though.

Something like this:

I am sure you can get cheaper ones but the above one is £90.

i`ve never seen such a bad picture than with the composite that comes with the ps3, i could not use the system it was that bad. Resistance looked like a 1st gen ps1 game, the xbm i could not read the text was so fuzzy and saying that traded my 360 i was very  . When i got my hdmi cable this change and the picture looks ace. I would not buy a ps3 if i did not have hdtv or monitor with dvi.

I'm currently using it on a 36" Philips SDTV, and it looks perfectly fine. For me gaming alone isn't enough of a reason to spend £1000+ on a new TV, especially when the vast majority of TV channels still look a lot better on an SDTV.

Yes it does, unfortunately by forcing it via HDMI it required a HDCP compatible monitor and not that many people have those.

So what you are saying there is the console has nothing more to offer than better graphics over its older brother?

What he's saying in My opinon is Bull, I've got the PS3 running through a standard television and to compare it to PS2 is ludicris. I have a question theboyrob, are you playing PS2 games on it?

RFOM on a standard television obviously isnt as pretty as on a HDTV, but it's still a fantastic game.

Also, I've been playing the PS3 previously on a Sony Bravia, So i definately see the difference in quality, and it IS huge.

But it's not like dropping the PS3 back a decade

unfortunately PS3 does look very similar to PS2 when fed through scart

as fundamentally its resolution that is the limiting factor in the "wowness" of the game

the graphics id say were better than PS2, but they're not a patch on what they could be if it was running through HD.

im currently running a PS3 through my 28" Sony CRT thats about 4 years old. It does look better than PS2 ( i sold mine about 2 years ago) but your not doing it justice.

you've got at least 5 years to do it justice. If you can only spend £500 right now - the PS3 won't disappoint on a SDTV.

Just realised my TV does have DVI, I'd been using a VGA>DVI connector for my 360.

So am I alright? I have a Phillips 32" HD TV, not sure on the model. Do I just need the hdmi->dvi adaptor and I'm good to go?

see if you can find one of these:

£2.99 + £50 p&p if you're lucky.

Dont suppose it'd work to stack HDMI>DVI>VGA adapters :D

The end display needs decryption technology and all that I expect. No using an ancient VGA CRT display like you can with a 360

It terms of graphical ability, comparing the PS2 with the PS3, not forgetting the PS2 is very old hardware (must be nearly ten years now?) the difference in terms of quality of the graphics drawn isn't an awful lot IMO because its limited to the 576i of the tv. You need a high res output, be it either 720p/1080i/1080p to enjoy all the graphical effects because you miss half of them with the composite as the resolution isn't high enough to show them properly.

I only have motorstorm at the moment. Maybe the problem is I have a large ish tv and sit fairly close to it, but with the supplied lead the graphics were a joke, very mushy and blurry, couldn't read text on the screen that easily in the lobby never mind in the web browser.

The HDMI has transformed the machine. Sure it has extra things over the PS2 such as Blu Ray, built in web browser, full online play, but most of these features you need a high quality video output to enjoy them!
