Me and the Mrs have decided to get rid of both our cars and just have one small and very economical car.

I've got an immaculate Zetec Mondeo (V Plate) and the Mrs has an old Megane which is a bit of a shed.

We've seen a rather nice pug 206 1.9 Diesel, which has working aircon, FSH, factory fitted pug alloys, electric windows and mirrors. It has 83,000 miles on the clock, but had its timing belt and clutch done in October (5,000 miles ago).

To be honest, I'll be gutted to get rid of the Mondeo, but at the same time, pleased to have the money spare from not having to service, tax and insure it.

We took the 206 on a test drive and it seemed ok Not as good to drive as the Mondeo, but still fairly nice. Does anyone have experience or views on 206 diesels? Are they ok for longer journeys, or just suited for urban driving?

I'm pretty sure it's the XUD lump in the 206 1.9.

If it is, it will run for atleast another 200k miles.

Sadly the rest of the car won't, the electrics will play silly games long before the engine pops.

I'd go for the 306 1.9 DT tbh.

Rubbish. Plagued with electrical faults, bits fall apart, the displays for the radio die randomly, rattles like crazy. Engine very reliable but godawfully slow.

Unless you do high mileage the most cost effective thing to do is pick the car you like best that you already own, and keep it, selling the other one.

Bin the Megane, keep the Mondeo. They are economical, cheap to fix, wont give you the problems the 206 will and its probably worth less than the 206 anyway so you'd be spending more money for a 'cheaper to run car' - false economy.

A £500 106 would be better than a 206 IMO. They are incredibly crap cars apart from GTi.

If this is a 1.9 D and not Turbo then just forget about it. HDi would be a better option anyway in the 206.

Fox has got it spot on, I do not know anybody that has had a 206 and something a) not fall off it OR b) it not break down OR c) it not have an electrical fault.

The dials going is a top one, dash lights failing and then there is the handling.

Don't waste your money on one of these, my neighbour sold her KA for a 1.9 206 and she has regretted it ever since. She is blonde though :p

I agree fox, I have nothing but good things to say about Mondeos, even though my m8s rip it out of me for driving a family car! The build quality is second to none, especially when compared to the likes of renault and peugot!

Parking is an issue with the Mondeo. My Mrs has to drive to work each day and her works car park can barely cope with the Megane, let alone a huge Mondeo, plus she isn't keen on driving larger cars.

I've been offered 1200 trade in for my Mondeo, aparrently the trade value is actually £900. I was shocked at this and showed them what good condition my car is in.

Another car we saw and liked was the Ford Puma, we took it for a test drive, and despite having a smaller engine, it was actually faster than the Mondeo! The only thing which put me off was that it had a little bit of rust around two of the wheel arches.

What with having a rather large mortgage etc, we'd rather not go over the £3000 mark for a smallish car - Astra or smaller. Anymore and we would have to take a loan out rather than use our savings.

Any suggestions?

What size engine is in the Mondeo?

How many miles do you do per year (combined).

I take it your AC doesn't work in the Mondeo as you described the 206 with having "working aircon"?

I'd say we do about 17 k per year, now that I'm in a job which doesn't require the use of a car.

The Mondeo aircon works fine, its just I've seen a lot of cars advertised with aircon, but that actually doesn't work - eg due to cracked condenser etc.

We're looking at getting rid of the Mondie cause we want to reduce to one car, and the Mrs isn't keen on uber-big cars....

Are you sure? 17k is a hell of a lot for someone in a job which doesn't need a car - it's way above average. It's about 50 miles a day, every day, 7 days a week!

Sorry, I won't be driving to and from work, but the Mrs will, 50-60 mile round trip depending on which route she takes dependent on traffic congestion.

I no longer need to drive to and from work any more as I recently changed jobs and have a job in a city centre. This means I can get to and from work by train, which works out much cheaper - hence the mondeo being surplus to requirements.

We go on holiday quite a lot, so will be using the car to drive to different parts of the country and airports etc. So I'd imagine 17000 miles is about right.

We want to go down to one car, the Mrs doesn't like the Mondeo (she's a petite lady) and finds it cumbersome, I don't like the megane cause its a shed on wheels. So we need to get something that is reasonably economical (petrol or diesel) and small enough for my Mrs to drive.

I'd be willing to consider anything as big as an Astra or as small as a 206. Don't think I'd go for a SMART though lol.

There is no way I'd put up with 50 miles a day in 1.9D 206. Awful. Shame, Mondeo seems the perfect car for it.

Consider.. I dunno, a Xsara 1.9TD?
