Was driving one of the cars from work and it broke down (opposite the Mercedes garage in Hanley at rush hour  )

Got to traffic lights and tried to pull off and it sounded like a bag of nails and i had zero power,so i got round the corner and stopped. Decied to move it 100 yars off double yellows and it was if something was dragging on the ground, checked all around once stopped and nothing was hanging loose. Old man thinks a front brake locked but it sounded very dodgy at idle aswell, any ideas?

sorry 2.0HDi 90, V -reg (1999)

Sounds bad idleing, but goes much worse when moving

edit, 115000miles, been pool car for 60,000 so it must take some abuse :(

First thing that springs to mind id the cambelt jumping a few teeth. The HDI's are prone to the pulley and tensioners breaking up on high milers.

Is the auxilliary belt still intact? The bottom pulley on the crank is a rubber bonded jobbie and this usually seperates at about 100K, throws the auxilliary belt off and can take the cambelt with it too.

Can you tell what area of the engine bay the row is coming from?

car is in the garage now (strangely broke down only 100yards away).

Couldn't get the bonet open, tried doing everything with the catch but it wouldent open :(

Did sound like a belt to me, but if i can't open a bonnet take that comment as you will :( i'll let you know tommorrow if your right

One of the engine mounts had broke and shifted the whole engine forwards/sidewides and the belts hit the front. They are not sure how much it will be yet

Good grief, for a car that old? Cut 'N' Shut? :O

Steer clear of it if i were you.
Eh? An engine mount is a relatively puny item made of rubber and aluminium alloy, for one to fail is not uncommon at all.
