Pulled...for being young in a nice car?

i got pulled for having a "new & nice" car and being too young for it.

It was a 3year old 1.25lx fiesta and i was 25 at the time.... sigh. That copper was a right jobsworth too, telling me i shouldnt be out at night, i should be at home etc.

But then i was driving through a rundown Rainham in Essex...

I never once had it this despite at the time driving a larger BMW that was newer than an old E46 is now, often late at night on nights out at Uni, people in the car, etc etc.

I'm pretty sure the car is a secondary factor - its your driving style that draws attention to you.

I don't think it is even quite that. I've 'pushed my luck' around Police cars in the VXR and ST, never been pulled over in either.

Perhaps it is the fact I'm not "tip-toeing" around them.

Not sure if there is a single reason to single out. I mean, my dad got pulled the other day. He's in his 50's and drives a Merc - was dropping my sister at a party, go figure.

I think its a combination of a selection the following, sorta like a pick 3 out of the following list :
- Looks young
- Ethnicity
- Type of car
- Type of driving
- Following a database check
- Mistaken identity
- The area you are driving through

Its basically stereotyping or 'profiling', they stop people and do checks based on the most likely scenario and unfortunately, young drivers (often ethnic) and certain vehicles are usually the biggest trouble causers (whether that's an accident or a stolen vehicle etc).

In my experiences, I think I was pulled due to being young, non-Caucasian, in a nice car and in a not so nice area.

They could have had limited information when pulling you only for more detailed / correct info to come once you had stopped. At least they told you instead of just driving off :p

True, I suppose it fits the vague description of 'sports car' even though it was the Honda :p

True!

Some years back a police VAN pulled me over. 6 of them came running out and searched the entire car. Rear and front seats, boot, everything.

They found a screw driver and began to ask questions lol. It was almost as if they wanted to find something.

Perhaps the pipe and slippers put them off.

I got pulled once because it was silly o'clock and the copper saw I'd got a boost gauge in an old Clio. They'd had a spate of stolen cars in the area and were checking up on people driving about a quiet urban area at night. They were polite explained their reasons for the stop, took an interest in the car given it wasn't exactly normal and then sent me on my way. :)

They probably had a report of an identical vehicle that had been spotted involved in a crime.

Screwdrivers are a very common weapon.

No, I think they were just trying to get lucky.

They basically said "There have been reports of crime among the ethnic minority"

I found the use of the word "Minority" rather hilarious.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me to pull you over.

Heck, I look ancient, yet still have been pulled over randomly driving late at night in some parts of London.

Doesn't bother me - it's nice to see some proactive policing.

Nothing wrong with being proactive. I like to see police on the streets.

But pulling over "Random" drivers is not (imo) a good use of police time.
