I have had a bit of an impulse buy!

Seen a acer x34a on sale the other day and couldn't help myself.

Need some advise - i know my current specs will be nowhere near good enough for me to see the benefits of this screen (will it be as bad as i am thinking? ) and i want to do something about it. Not worried about going over kill but i would like to do the monitor justice.

my options are - Buy what i need to upgrade my old components
Buy a complete new setup and sell the old one or give it to the other half to use

i don't mind spending some money but don't want to go crazy.

My current spec are ;

Intel Core i5-3570K @ 4.5GHz
Gigabyte Z77-G1-Sniper M3 Intel Z77
Radeon HD 7970
550w GX 80 plus cooler master psu
16gb team group elite black ddr3
Been looking at the 1070 and 1080 and cant make up my mind if it is worth the jump in price between the two.

if i went this route i am guessing i may need to improve power supply and such.

Cant make up my mind what to do and just find myself spending hours sat in front of a PC trying to find some insight.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated

I can't see the 7970 being adequate at that resolution for most games, though I don't know what your expectations are in terms of fps/dropping down settings and so on.

I'd probably look at one of the 1070s (there was a deal the other day on an MSI model, though I don't know if that's still available) and possibly a new PSU.

I don't think I'd automatically buy a whole new system. See how things go - in stages first.

had already realised that my current card wouldn't be any good for this screen. But was worried if i spent money on a 1080 it wouldn't be beneficial for my current system.

I think what i may do is just buy a 1080 and see how it goes from there.

Read so many posts about waiting for this card waiting for that card, but if you think the 1080 will be ideal ill go ahead and try it.

thanks

1080 or if you want to future proof longer get a Titan X. If you don't mind waiting a month or two to see if the mysterious 1080ti actually launches then that would be the ideal option.

CPU is fine as others have said. GPU wise a 1070 would be good, 1080 would be better - I use a 1080 myself on a PG348Q and run everything on near max settings for fps between 50-99. Great stuff.

1080 powers my X34a brilliantly. I got the Gigabyte card above for £529.99 a fortnight ago and I'm sure you could pick one up around that price point when the 1080ti lands. If you're not bothered about price (I was) then just grab the 1080ti in a fortnight.

Definitely go for a 1080 if you can. My 1070 does well but drops short of fps matching the 100hz refresh rate

Or get the ti as suggested - price dependent!

A 1080 for that 21:9
Though it may be a good idea to wait a bit and see what the Ti does for the current 1080 prices
A 1070 in the otherhand will most probably keep you playing around 60 fps, if you're okay with that get that.
But seen as though you bought a 100hz monitor, might as well use it, for that a 1080 is needed

Wait until the 28th as the GTX 1080 TI is probably going to drive the prices down a bit, and a GTX 1080 Ti would be a much better card for the X34 than a gtx 1080 (after the announcement you'll also be able to pick up a GTX 1080 on the second hand market for much less).
