Great buy for £1750. Can't be that many 1 owner 55k mile 172s left.

This was my thinking, I know the 172 cup was like only a one year run, they made only like 90 silver cars, of which around 70 are left, am not sure how many blue ones were sold in the UK but I think its 300-400 cars, I believe around half of those have either been scrapped, written off or turned into race / rally cars as that seems quite a common theme for 172 cups for them to be turned into racing cars, but as a base car it makes perfect sense due to the thinner glass, no abs, no AC, its more race car and obviously an 89kg lighter car to begin with.

Going over the car I am surprised to see so many items in the car that could be removed to further reduce weight, like under bonnet sound proofing, bulkhead sound proofing, boot lining, tool kit, would be very easy to get one down to around 950kg which when you consider its got a 2.0l up front knocking out around 160 horses that is rather impressive.

The more time I spend on it, restoring it, the more I want to keep it original, its such a great example and its even still got the original Renault anti-theft window stickers they used to put in cars in the olden days, haha. :D

Definitely worth down the line giving the engine inlets, guards etc a paint. Makes such an improvement to the bay. I went for a darker colour but they look great it silver.

Plus a fresh coolant bottle from ECP really makes it look younger. Here's mine atm -

Yes that looks a huge improvement.

I had a quick scout around the bay, looks like the air intake, intake manifold is quite easily removed?
I spot you seem to have a supporting mount/bush on your engine bracket, is that a bushing insert to limit movement or a whole uprated bush?

Some questions:
1. Got a link to the ECP coolant bottle?
2. What type of paint did you use? Got a link, am guessing its just regular paint or high temperature paint? Yes I'd go silver with car been blue.
3. Link to yellow engine mount bush?
4. What kind of intake setup is that, assuming there is a cone filter within that metal box as well as your battery, or did you re-locate battery to the boot?

To get the engine bay so clean, did you risk using a pressure washer or did you buy a cleaning kit from somewhere and then use just free flowing water, as I say I gave mine a quick going over with brake cleaner last night to remove oil, grease and dirt, also by doing this it looks like my oil leak is coming from the front passenger side of the rocker cover gasket and then running down the front of the engine. The specialist is going to remove the rocker cover and reseal so that will resolve that.

P.S. You removed the heat blanket from under the bonnet it looks like?

Great little thing. I came VERY close to buying a Clio Trophy when I had my GT3, test drove a couple and still remember how impressed I was with the things. I actually regret not buying one not least as we had a 106XSI and 106GTI from new, my wife's 2nd and 3rd cars and they were epic little things. I've been lucky as have you to own some great cars, but you get a good hot hatch, usually one of the older ones and it reminds you that big power and capability to cross continents means little when it comes to outright fun....or pace on most roads.

Can I recommend you put something fit for purpose on the headlights? Wax then the sealant is in the wrong order. You'd be better putting a genuine lacquer on the lamps.

Thanks, I've had people advise against clearcoats as a year later it flakes/peels and been told to properly seal them I should get the Meguiars headlight kit as it comes with a spray on clear coat, though its not a clear coat but more a special UV formulation for headlights. So I think in a few months I shall grab one of those, give them another quick going over and seal with the Meguiars spray stuff, lots of feedback on the kits with people re-posting two years later and them still looking identical.

Intake is easy enough to remove, plus the engine mount / cambelt cover) can be removed with the engine supported with a jack below to paint. Plus throttle body, hoist brackets etc. Guides are definitely available on Cliosport (look for spark plug change etc).

Its just an insert that goes into the standard mount -https://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tuning/renault/renault-clio-mk2/engine/renault-clio-mk2-powerflex-front-upper-right-engine-mount-insert.html and limits movement a bit more.

2. Halfords VHT, doesn't need a primer and lasts. Recall silver being available

3. As above

4. Ktec induction with a battery/intake cover produced by MarcR (cliosport member). He does runs of them every now and again - quite popular when he does.

I just used engine degreaser and Autosmart G101 followed by a wet cloth and finally a dry cloth. Never been a fan of pressure washing under the bonnet.

And yeah I removed the blanket, makes no difference and it was looking a bit tatty!

The lower gearbox mount/brace or dogbone mount as it's know is common for wear too. Though most are 13+ years old now. You can also get a powerflex insert for these which really helps stiffen the engine movement up. On the negative side you do get a slight bit of vibration at idle.

I'd recommend getting the gearbox oil replaced, they tend to leak and if not topped up/serviced can run low and cause issues. I had a failed box on my first 182 due to this, i'm on my 4th now (182 not gearbox) and it's always one of the first service jobs on the list

Also instead of the Ktec induction kit, google 'clio fatty induction kit', basically the same thing but instead of £175, it'll cost £45-60.

I suppose to check I just grab the engine and try to shake and lift it? I did the old blip the engine at idle to see if the gear stick moves, yes it does move but not excessively, just a little, should there be zero movement or is a little normal? Driving it cannot really feel the gear stick moving when driving or changing gear.
Best is to put a jack under engine and push up. Then undo the mount and check it.

Also the dogbone mount doesn't last very long.

Got ya, I see I can buy Powerflex variants of these bushes/mounts, are the Powerflex in addition to the OE bush/mount or a complete new item and thus rendering the oe part void?

Gibbo with his fleet of various Blue Cars, OCUK forum has had an effect on you :p

Yes I did not particular want another blue car, my favourite Clio colour is liquid yellow, but Cup's were not made int his colour apart from a handful of 182 cup's unfortunately due to their rarity in this colour the values have already exploded considerably, typically around 4k for a liquid yellow 182 with high miles.

If I could pick any colour for my M3 it would either be silver grey (CSL colour) or the techno violet individual colour, though in fairness I really like the Topaz blue, really stunning colour.
For my SVR though, the blue was my primary choice, really suits the car.

Yes seen that, but I am inclined to keep the stock air box unless the car is too silent at which point I might make my own fatty kit up. I assume the gains realistically from a CAI are like 5-6HP and you lose the functional RAM AIR effect the factory system has?

Also I found the service work for the exhaust, its a Klarious mid section and rear silence, seems to be what ECP's sells as such I assume this is just a factory replacement, no additional noise or power?

Surely if you're starting to look at bits to strip you're taking away from the fact it would be perfect condition in your feint hope it increases in value massively over the coming years, or wil you keep these in your garage ready to go back on and "cash in"?

Addition. Look at my post in the Renaultsport thread for the Febi mount you can get off ebay for £25 ish. Will look much better as the original has started to corrode!

What do you mean?

OK shall do.
So to freshen up engine and dog bone, I need to buy the original bushes/mounts and then the Powerflex items on top to limit the movement, that correct?

Yes and no lol!

For the engine mount you will want a new one and the Powerflex on top. No point trying to powerflex that old mount.

if you want to upgrade the dogbone, you just use the existing one. Remove the standard rubber bushes and slot the new Powerflex ones in.
