Purchasing a car in the US then importing it.

Nearly new in either model they're around $30k. On PH and AT imports of the same age seem to be going for £30k ($47k). If I work on a projected depreciation of 35% over 3 years that means the car would be worth $19500 (£30550).?

Is there a mistake here? Or maybe I've completely misread or something. Shouldn't it be £19500?

Yep sorry got the currencies the wrong way round there.

$30k - 35% over 3years = $19500
£30k - 35% over 3 years = £19500

£19500 = $30k+. Simply put, the price I buy it brand new in the US could be the exact price of the car in the UK 3yrs old?

Spring 2011 apparently, don't know how much, and I don't know if they're selling it as a RHD think they might just be leaving it as LHD.

the press said they would be LHD official imports - just as with the corvette that was officially imported over here a while before Stratstone shut down its Cadillac / Hummer / Covette dealer network.

I have been getting quotes for a dodge ram 2500 cummins from florida to southhampton port to port for $1350. Then you have insurance, import duty and vat. Then you need to reg it for over here and tax it.

I would have though running the car over here for 12 months after importing would be a lot cheaper than having to pay the duty+VAT on the thing!

pretty much yes. Just keep it as a weekend car to keep the miles off it and buy a £50 Corsa for commuting or something.

It would have to be some kind of special/rare car to warrant the the shipping alone. You will need a container, which you may be able to share with somebody else. Your car will not be able to fill a whole container. I looked at this about 10 years ago as I wanted an old Dodge Challenger after seeing the original film vanishing point.

The container would be at least 2-4k to ship which you maybe able to share with someone shipping furniture etc. You will also need insurance just in case it bursts into flames and destroys the ship or worse for you the ship ends up at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Then you have all the nonsense this side of the pond which will involve adjusting the lighting and meeting our MOT standards.

If you want to import something that is like 30k plus and not really available here then go for it. otherwise I really wouldn't bother.
