3rd rock...
Really interesting (and kinda scary) to see whats happening in Russia. For those who dont know whats goin on: a punk-rock outfit called Pussy Riot sang a song in front of the altar in one of Moscows most important churches. Lots of swearing etc. The song was against the government.

The authorities were not impressed. They got flung in jail (already served 5 months) and can face upto *7 years* in prison for this. By their own admission they have acknowledged that doing this in a church wasnt the best idea but even they did not see this hardline stance against them coming. Its sad to see....they dont deserve to be jailed for this.

Its that old story again of the old hardliners locking up the young.

I gotta hand it to them - they have guts and are standing up to the system.

What do you lot think?!

Putin's government is cracking down on any dissent. They were stupid to provoke the government when it's history of murdering journalists and sending people to die in Siberia is still going on or only recent history. It's a country crooked to it's core.

two of them are parents.

should've maybe thought about this before they tried the shock factor angle.

That is an absurd argument considering the point of what they are doing.

"Oh no, I won't fight back against a government that I disagree with because it might cause me some sort of inconvenience, I'll let someone else do it."

Personally I applaud anyone willing to do what they did.

getting locked up and missing 3 months, possibly a lot longer of your child's life is an absurd argument? nothing to do with 'inconvenience'.

right ok. we obviously have different views on parenting.

Parenting has sod all to do with it, you are saying that people shouldn't express their views or fight against a corrupt government because it may influence their personal situation.

Do you think they didn't consider this? Do you honestly think they didn't realise there would be consequences as a result of their actions?

Did you not think they understood those risks and decided that when on one side there is a corrupt government who influence the lives of every single person in a country and on the other their personal family life, that the act that may in some way help move towards doing something beneficial for their entire country and every family in it may be the best thing they could do?

Honestly I would love to hear your justification.

What exactly were they rebelling against? They want more rock concerts in churches or something?

Yeah 7 years in prison is extreme but I don't see why they shouldn't be punished for what they did. While Churches are open to the public they're not public spaces where you can do whatever you want.... criticism of religion is fine but to go inside a religious building and do that isn't really on.
If they'd done it on the pavement outside then fair enough... they had no right to do it inside the Church.

If it were up to me they'd spend the night in the cells and be given cautions.

The country has put away high-ranking bankers and millionaires behind bars, these poor gals...dont stand a chance.

Sometimes its hard to believe its 2012 reading stories like this where just speech (singing) can get you 7 years (depending on where you live). I guess it makes you appreciate the greater freedom of expression we enjoy here. ..? How longs that gonna last lol.

If this was in the UK I don't think they can do anything as it's only trespass if you refuse to leave or you have been told by the landowner that you are not allowed there.
