I believe your thinking of the SPG (Special Patrol Group), it was forcibly disbanded in 1987 and replaced by the TSG (Territorial Support Group). Today's heavy handed riot cops are much tamer in comparison (the inquiry into their actions found that they regularly utilised bats, hammers and crowbars instead of their issued truncheons.

Whilst I agree they are not Police, they are there to fulfill a Policing function. I'm not sure what oversight they have though.
Charlie brookers news wipe was quit funny regarding the Olympics, they had some russian minister saying they don't mind gays attending as long as they don't fiddle with the children, they have some funny ideas do im not surprised that they locked up pussy riot.
Seems the russian public have a real movement doing on with equal rights, especially the repression of homosexuals so it will be interesting to see how the establishment handles it over the next few years, i don't think they'll get away with gulags and public flogging in this day and age as the youth are much more liberal and outspoken than they used to be.

They're not really seeing a movement for equal rights they're seeing a very strong popular movement against them.
Personally I'd rather hear all angles of a debate, it would be a boring thread if someone posted an opinion, and all the replies were "hell yeh, down with that kind of thing!"
