Put a deposit down, if it passes MOT fine it's mine

We are extremely lucky in the UK - our used car market is like no other in Europe. Great for buyers that is, not so brilliant for sellers.

I have a Dutch mate who has had the same base spec Mk2 Golf since I've known him (8 years or so)
It's a shed, the sort of thing that would fetch £150 here if you were extremely lucky, more likely to just get broken up.
It's worth easily over a grand in Holland. Madness!

So you reckon I should buy the exact same car but the 200bhp t4 version instead ( they start from 3k...)?

If all you wanted was more power, yes that would make sense.

What is a marked improvement then ? A 2003 Mondeo Ghia 2.5 ? I see that in the exact same league...

Sorry, how is a much newer, much more modern car in exactly the same league?

I'm not getting rid of anything just yet . Going from a an l4 to a v6 is a significant improvement, I also gain features like electric seats...

It is not a significant improvement if you only gain a stonking 20BHP through those two extra cylinders. Actually, that's a little bit pathetic.

You keeping your Volvo "just in case" speaks volumes about your true confidence in this new car TBH.

Yes, of course, otherwise I wouldn't consider buying it...

What's the NL's equivalent of SpecSavers? :p

Nobody is suggesting something else, just not a bottom of the pond example.

Buy a nice gallant. Not a shed.
I agree, unless he can fix this for less than the cost of a decent one :p

That seldom works out in the real world, once a car has become a shed you invariably spend more than a decent one in the first place.

I suppose the only advantage (if you can call it that) is you can turn it into a sort of pay as you go car, rather than spend the money in one go.

What does it offer over this car ? 5 years of development isn't much in the car world.

1.5 seconds quicker to 100kph (60mph) is a significant improvement imho. 17%...

Specsavers :p...

Even if he can its had a hard life and more trouble will appear.
This point was also made near the beginning of the thread, but it's just going round in circles.
This is what you say, but what has the cosmetic condition got to do with the mechanical condition ? The car has a service history, it's been serviced on time and maintained properly, just because the clutch started acting up since the last time it's been for a service doesn't mean it's in a bad condition...

My current car, while being treated extremely well on the exterior and interior ( interior properly maintained and car is hand washed every 2 weeks and waxed every 2 months), it is driven hard and mechanically, it's not being treated as it should and done all it's things during the required service intervals... I fix things when they break or when they are worn, not before.
