qnap/synology NAS enclosures

I don't suppose there's much difference between them when they're used for file sharing over a network. I'm not bothered by ftp, BT etc functions.

What I would like to know is:
1. how many external USB drives can be attached (I currently have 2 external USB drives)?
2. will attached USB drives still function if the enclosure doesn't have a HD installed?

Looking at the specs of the 4drive one it has 2 USB slots so i would have though 2 drives can be connected. Not sure about not having an internal drive though. Shoot an email off to the company and ask?
