Quest 2 Facebook leak - XR2 chipset, 6gb RAM, "almost 4k display"

I hope the deluxe strap + battery makes it more comfortable than the original. I think I must have spent over £100 on Quest accessories in an attempt to get it more comfortable. I've achieved that but it's a faff as I have to hook a battery pack on every time I play.

VR Cover for Quest 2 mind you Facebook have their own official pack now.

I'll be ordering one of those. I just got the one for the original Quest and it's incredibly comfortable. I'll be giving the old Quest to my Wife to use for Beat Saber. One of the biggest faffs at the moment is having to take my lenses out and adjust the straps for her. If it's setup for her permanently she's more likely to use it.

Quick question, is there other cables other than the Oculus ones that work for the link? Seeing different information.

Thanks

Any good quality USB2 cable will work, though USB3 is preferred. The trouble with USB3 is you're limited in length unless you get a super expensive optical cable like the official link cable.

Has anyone played Tetris? I've heard it's amazing

It's great, but the graphics are more cut down and blurrier than the PC version. If you want portable, go for the Quest version, otherwise go for PC and play via link. I bought both versions in the end as there was a special offer on the Epic store.

That Ars Technica article is pretty bad, big complaints about IPD.

I didn't have much problem with the fixed IPD on the Go, (66mm IPD) so I hope the Quest 2 is ok. The IPD slider on the Quest is a pain anyway as it gets knocked out of position and can trigger while playing.

How do you think it will look on the quest 2

Sharper, but it'll still be lower detail and blurrier textures than the PC.

The main thing about the Quest 2 is the much reduced SDE (Screen door effect). Lots of games will still be rendering at lower than screen res and so might look slightly blurred or aliased, but the lack of SDE will really help improve image quality.

I'm hoping this will replace my Go as my 3D movie player. The Quest wasn't brilliant for movies because the OLED pentile subpixels caused a lot of fringing.

I know it's too early to say but is the elite strap likely to be better than a deluxe audio strap?

Comfort, probably, but there's no audio solution. However as the strap is designed to be detachable it's almost certain there'll be 3rd party straps with audio, or audio add-ons for the deluxe strap.

It really looks like the biggest downside is the headstrap. I found the Go one pretty uncomfortable and not particually secure, and that's a lighter device. I can see why they did it though. Being able to fold it down and stick it in a bag is a much easier with a flexible strap.

Thanks, and one other question......can you wear it whilst it's plugged into the mains? Just wondering for like a 3hr movie

Yes you can. It looks like it's going to be an amazing device for watching movies. Finally I can retire my Oculus Go, which was my previous favourite for 3D movies as the screen was sharp, and the device relatively lightweight and compact.

Ironically the Valve Index, which is my dedicated PC VR headset, is terrible for movies as it has horrendous lens glare. The glare is ok in games, but for some reason it's really annoying when watching films.

Another improvement is fixed foveated rendering is gone, so games will look even sharper. A lot of Quest games looked pretty blocky around the edge of the screen due to the FFR needed to keep the frame rate up.

I have the original Rift with Touch controllers that they did for £399 a while back. I would like a newer headset and was set on the Reverb G2 until this was announced.

It's a fantastic price but I've read bad things about the link cable. I see the benefit of a standalone product but wouldn't want it to be at the detriment of the PCVR experience.

Compared to a CV1 Oculus Link is a perfectly acceptable experience. The level of detail is higher and SDE is reduced. Of course you miss the coverage of the external tracking and the image is a little soft due to the compression, plus currently it's only 72hz, but it is much better than the CV1 image. Facebook have also said there will be quality improvements in the compression coming later as well as 90hz.

The biggest advantage is true wireless PCVR via sideloaded Virtual Desktop, which if your wireless connection is good enough then it's an amazing experience. (Unfortunately I can only get a good wireless signal for mine right next to the router... which is next to the PC with no room to move around, so not really worth it for me).

What do you all think about the screen in the Quest 2 - believe it is LCD.

I had an original Rift and sold this to get a Rift S but really hated the black levels (and also had connectivity issues with PC), so returned this and bought a Quest. Really happy with the Quest, it's a great device.

Nearly all PC VR devices are now moving to LCD, mainly because of the subpixel arrangement which gives a much sharper image for the same number of pixels, so there's not much of a choice.

If the black levels are anything like the Index then it won't be too much of an issue, as they are definitely better than the Rift S. I've not seen any review complain about the black levels either.

Because it’s a battery built into a comfortable headset.

You wouldn’t be able to use your comfortable headset with link, presumably?

From the horses mouth when adding it to my basket: “Elite strap with battery cannot be used with oculus link”

So unless you are planning on being exclusively mobile it’s probably better to get the standard elite strap and carry case, rather than the battery version that you can’t use with link.

You can use the battery headstrap with the Link, you just can't have the battery plugged in while using the Link cable. In any case there's no point in having the battery connected as while using USB3 the Quest will charge the battery while using it.

The battery headstrap will add more counterweight though which will make the headset more comfortable.

From what Ive read the battery pack headset has a charging port on the back of it that passes through to the headset itself. So to charge both batteries you only need to plug in one cable.

The battery headband itself is connected to the main headset by a short cable that runs along the side, to the standard charging port.

Obviously you can use the headband with link, as in you can still wear the headband. But you'll need to disconnect the cable from the side of the headset and plug in the link cable.

It is a pity that the battery cable isn't a USB C passthrough for data as well as power, as the rear charge port connection would be a lot better location for the link cable.
