Quest 2 Facebook leak - XR2 chipset, 6gb RAM, "almost 4k display"

Not sure if it's been confirmed here, but Quest 2 definitely supports Wifi 6, so it may be that the link cable is not actually needed, and wireless will work well, of course requires virtual desktop.

Carmack explained in the Connect Q&A (held in Horizons) that increased wi-fi bandwidth isn't necessarily the panacea for wireless VR that people think it is. A stable connection depends on a lot of other factors as well as bandwidth. Things like how many times packets need to be re-sent when they're lost, the latency of the wireless encoding and decoding and how congested your wi-fi channels are.

The main thing stopping official wireless PC VR functionality coming to Quest is political - Facebook don't want users experience to be soured by a poor wi-fi connection, so they're reluctant to do it, even if a large number of users would get an acceptable experience.

Carmack is continuing to argue that people are doing this now, with Quest 1 and software, and they find the experience worthwhile, so there is a use case out there, and a dedicated solution (say a specific wirelss dongle on a less congested frequency) would be a good product for some people.

4x the video bandwidth according to Qualcomm, but I believe they are underclocking it significantly from what carmack was saying at connect so how that affects that specific ability remains to be seen.

The CPU is underclocked, for thermal and power reasons, but the GPU is running at full speed. Not sure about the DSPs though.

Are people thinking of doing duplicate Facebook accounts for this.... or....?

I have a Facebook account that I deactivated a long time ago... and for some reason I’m reluctant to delete it.... it’s go loads of photos and memories on there. I guess it’s all just bull**** that needs letting go of.

My plan was to delete my old one, then set up a new ‘empty’ one with my real name. But interested to hear what other people intend on doing.

Don't create a duplicate account - it's very likely to be flagged as fake and you run the risk of getting banned permanently from Facebook and the Oculus platform. There have been quite a few people on Reddit saying they did this and now their accounts are banned, and they can't get Facebook to reactivate them, and can't create any other accounts as they also get banned, so they're completely stuffed.

Best thing to to is recover your original account and just enable all the privacy settings.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose if I really want to be ultra private I should delete my old account, wait 30 days and create a new one.

Don't do that either, mad as it sounds, it runs the risk of again being flagged as a duplicate account. Best thing to do is download all your data from your account, delete anything you don't want, and make the account private.

I don't use Facebook just doesn't intrest me, can a rift s be used on steam vr without oculus software

No, you have to use the Oculus client software. But if you register an Oculus account before October then you won't have to use a Facebook account to use it. After October a Facebook account is required for all new Oculus users.

For now, I think they said in 2022 or possibly 23 a facebook account will be required for all.

Jan 2023 will be the cut-off date, but Facebook said they will (somehow) make it possible to use your purchased content past that date if you don't merge your Oculus account into a Facebook one. So I imagine you should still be able to use Steam VR as you'll have to have access to the Oculus client to play your existing content. However some Oculus apps won't work as they'll be too heavily tied into Facebook (I'm betting there'll be a lot that don't work by then.)

I keep banging on about this, but for me the deal breaker with the G2 over an Oculus headset or Index is there's no capacitive touch, so you can't make hand gestures, and there no feedback simply for moving your fingers around the buttons or touching the grip. That's a huge immersion breaker if you want to play social games or games where hand interactions are important - like Lone Echo or Echo Arena for example. Reviewers have reported that on the G2 their hands are stuck in thumbs up poses in games that support gestures.

I went for the Elite Strap with battery, mainly because it will add a counterweight as well as extra battery life. The fact it also looks cool helps.

I'm sure third parties will produce clip-on headphones, or replacement straps with headphones. The only issue there is then it's likely the headset won't fit in the official case.

I actually find the Quest audio for general gameplay is good enough, and the spatial effect is incredible.

My concern with the battery strap is comfort when reclining. I often lie down to watch a movie and the bulkier battery area of the strap may dig in to the back of your head.

True. The strap is easy to remove though. For lying down watching a movie I would just put the old strap back on for a while.

Are the clip on headphones just for convenience? I use a pair of over the ear Bose sound cancelling one's with my Go and it gives even more immersion.

Yes, clip on (or built in) headphones reduce friction, making it easier to jump into VR with decent sound whenever you like. Having to handle separate headphones and the wires just makes it more hassle to use VR.

True
The two headsets really aren’t trading blows when it comes to pcvr. The quest is cheap and and thumb prescience. The g2 has better audio and visual fidelity with better immersion due to no latency.

for a pc enthusiast forum who buy expensive GPUs... surely we understand the value of plugging our displays into a gpu display port rather than a USB port otherwise why do we bother buying GPUs.. we should just stream our pc games over the internet using shadow or something.. that’s what oculus link is

I wouldn't recommend the Quest 2 as a dedicated PC headset over an Index or a G2 primarily because of the compression issues (both on image quality and CPU/GPU overheads), but it's a great capability to have in addition to the headset being a standalone experience.

And of course if you have a gaming laptop that is powerful enough for VR but which doesn't have a displayport connector then the USB or wireless (via virtual desktop) connection provides a way to play VR on a modern VR headset.

After watching how well the Quest works wireless via Virtual Desktop Im back to being tempted by the Q2 again.

I just wish it'd work reliably for me. I can use Virtual Desktop right next to my router, which is pointless as it's next to my PC, but down in the lounge where I have more space it only works intermittently. Fine one minute, then a juddery mess the next.

Have you considered a wifi access point in your lounge? Also what router do you have? I'm only running a standard Virgin supplied router but it has 5Ghz channel which nothing else I own uses.

I've got a D-Link DIR 878, but it's in my attic, two floors above my lounge. I have got a wi-fi repeater but thats for 2.4ghz for streaming 1080p video to my Roku box.

I can't even use casting from Quest to phone properly as that's also intermittent - works great for a bit, then it breaks up and it's awful.

Quest and the Index are the same res.
Quest renders at lower than the resolution of the screen, even in Link mode.
Quest also uses fixed foveated rendering which reduces the image quality at the edges of the screen for many native titles.
Quest has OLED pentile screens which have fewer subpixels than the Index's LCD screens that have RGB stripe.

So not really the same resolution in practice unfortunately. Though the black levels and colours are far better.

Quest 2 really is a game changer.
Looking forward to playing the simple games more than anything

Table tennis looks good

Eleven Table Tennis is probably one of the most realistic and immersive games on the Quest. Just don't try to lean on the table!

I hope though it gets a 90hz update, because you really do notice the 72hz refresh rate due to the fast ball movement.

Is it feasible to buy this headset, if your cheap with app purchases? Is there enough free stuff online to make it worth it for a curious onlooker?

There's a fair number of decent free apps: Rec Room, Mission ISS, VR Chat, and more, plus huge amounts that can be sideloaded including ports of Quake, Quake 2, Half Life and Return To Castle Wolfenstein.

But of course most of the action is in the paid apps.

Honestly, people are making too much of it.

Unless you deleted a Facebook account a while ago... that seems to prevent you ever getting another one. Loads of reports of users trying to get a Facebook login again for Quest 2 but being insta-banned with no appeal possible because of this.

I really hope they sort out the various account issues, otherwise things are going to be interesting in October.

There will be some "sale of goods act" head scratching going on come Oct.

Doesn't help that as soon any anyone says their Facebook was banned that the immediate reaction from a lot of people is 'stop being an idiot and you won't get banned'. There's a lot of ignorance how Facebook accounts really work. Heck, I didn't know until I started investigating the issues. I never heard of anyone creating a Steam, Microsoft, Origin, Uplay, PSN, Gog, etc. account and having it banned within a couple of minutes of creation. Twitter, yes, but that's a free social media platform, like Facebook is, but you don't tie your gaming hardware and purchases to a twitter account.

are they using the same email address or a new one?
not sure how they could know you had an "old" account if you create everything from scratch, my IP address changes every time I reboot my router pretty much

They have some pretty complex 'anti bot' algorithms, and seem very good at flagging duplicate or fake accounts. The big issue right now is that they don't have the resources for manual verification, so if an account gets locked automatically then it's effectively a permanent suspension as they won't get around to viewing your evidence that you're a real person.
