Quest 2 Facebook leak - XR2 chipset, 6gb RAM, "almost 4k display"

I know someone with 5 accounts, so they aren't THAT good.

Looking online it says "all new users" will need a Facebook account, but I already have an Oculus (rift) account, can I not still use that until 2023?

Facebook accounts are required to use the Quest 2, and from October all new users will need to use an Oculus account with any Oculus hardware. Existing Oculus account users can continue to use their existing accounts until January 2023, but will be unable to use any social features. Past 2023 Oculus have said they will try to keep your access to your content, but of course by then most stuff will be tied into Facebook anyway so I don't know how much will still keep working. Plus you'll probably be locked out of the store.

I'm trying to find out if you need a Facebook account to use side quest, I'd really rather prefer to avoid the official store as much as possible.

But then about the only "app" I'm interested in is VirtualDesktop which you need to use side quest anyway.

Quest 2 requires you to log into the Oculus app on your phone with a Facebook account to setup and manage the headset. You can't turn on Oculus link without the headset being setup first through the phone app.

How many stories are real though? Since the Oculus Quest 2 was announced I have been asking friends, family, nieces and nephews. All Heavy Facebook users. None of them know anybody who has ever been banned. They all know loads of people using fake photos and multiple accounts. And I also asked about deleting their profile. My niece said most of her friends have deleted their Facebook profile at least once and setup a new one a couple months later without issue.

I don't have reason to disbelieve most of the reports I've read, especially as evidence has been posted of email exchanges with Oculus. It seems like Facebook is really being strict with account signups right now due to the US election, and it's catching a lot of returning Facebook users out. It's ironic that Facebook have finally created something that makes ex-facebook users want to come back to them, and then immediately banning some of them.

Yes, for the vast majority it'll work fine, but I've never seen people complaining that their Oculus account was banned, and this problem will only get worse coming up to launch unless Facebook puts support and policies into place to address it. They won't address it if people don't highlight it and complain.

I'd chalk up the Quest 2 as a big accomplishment

It'll turn the VR market upside down. No-one can compete at that price point with those features. We really could do with some competition in the mobile VR space though as it's not healthy when a single company dominates any sector.

I was hoping for an announcement from Apple, I realise that it's expected that they'll enter with an AR product but it would still legitimise VR for the mass market.
Unless Sony do a hybrid PSVR 2 then I think Facebook have the market to themselves. To be fair to them, it's a market that they've largely built by themselves and to a large degree they deserve to reap the benefits of this. I'm sure they're still a long way from even breaking even on this VR venture.

I think the biggest hope would be a wireless PSVR where the rendering is done on the PS5 with decent motion controllers. Any product Apple makes would probably be very good, but I can't see it being price competitive with the Quest 2.

Some potentially good news regarding Facebook accounts on Quest - you may not need a 'full' account to use it.

From a post on Reddit:

I did a UX test with the FB/Oculus team today and asked about the requirement for FB accounts when setting up the Quest 2. You will not be required to link an existing FB account to the Quest. If you don't link your existing account, you will have the option to create a firewalled FB account for the sole purpose of using it on the Quest. They said they are doing this to unify their user management systems which makes sense. Managing one moderation and community team is easier than managing 2.

This seems to break the 'one account only, ever' rule, and allow you to use a separate Facebook account from any personal account, only for VR. It could also allow people who are banned from Facebook to use the Oculus platform.

This will solve most of my misgivings about foisting Facebook accounts on Oculus users. Fingers crossed it's true!

As someone who is usually an OLED-whore, I think the black sacrifice is worth the clarity/SDE upgrade

Definitely! My experience of the Go (an LCD with awful black levels, but RGB stripe subpixels) Verses the Quest (OLED with great black levels but pentile subpixels) was that the Go was a far more pleasant movie watching experience due to the low SDE. Quest looked awful when watching movies because of SDE and colour fringing around the edges of objects, especially faces.

Really looking forward to watching some 3D movies on the Quest 2. In fact I might have to reconvert some at higher resolution, to do the Quest 2 justice.

Avatar is the best 3D movie experience.
Prometheus is not a brilliant film, but the 3D is really well done.
Any of the 3D Pixar movies.
Doctor Strange is the best of the Marvel 3D movies
Dredd is a must-see in VR, especially for the slow-mo sequences.
Ready Player One for the coolness of watching a movie about VR in VR
The Hobbit trilogy looks excellent in 3D, pity the films are bloated and over the top.
Rogue 1 is the best of the 3D Star Wars films.
Alita Battle Angel also is very good.

What strikes me with these images is that clearly the G2 is a little sharper up close, i.e the text on the steering wheel and the reflections on the bonnet look better. But move away beyond the car, for example looking at the grandstand to the right, and there is very little difference that I can see between them.

In some ways this is disappointing because distance sharpness is important to me. If I look through my patio window right now at a brick wall about 10m away, it is pin point sharp against a blue sky background (I have my contact lenses in). Both of those images, when looking at distance, look ever so slightly like vision correction is needed. I don't know how many here wear glasses or contact lenses, but its the same kind of effect that you get when trying to look at something far away without them on.

We don't know what detail levels were set there, so there could be some blurring effects on. But you're right, with sim racing it's always the distance that's the issue as you need to be able to see corners and markers coming up. That was my biggest issue when using the CV1 for racing - it was only borderline usable due to the SDE and low resolution. The index is far better, but the extra resolution is taxing my 1080ti so I can't run sims at a decent framerate. Waiting until I can get a 3080.

Any sign of game sizes increases significantly on the Quest 2 compared to the 1? Not sure to get 64gb or 256gb.
Only planning on having games and probably no movies stored on it. Aim is to mostly be used for PCVR.

11gb is taken up by the OS, so you only have 53gb free, but that's plenty for most games.

There are a few games with installs of several gb, but not many, though I imagine that will increase over time.

If you're not planning to put movies on it and use mainly for PCVR then I'd say 64gb is enough. I went for the 256gb mainly because I plan on putting movies on it, and with the hi-res screen I can now put higher quality encodes on there, which will take up large amounts of space.

I've played quite a few games using Quest Oculus Link and I never really noticed any lag. I even played Alyx via virtual desktop and it was perfectly playable, but the controller response wasn't as smooth as Link.

I imagine Beat Saber expert+ might be an issue, but for most gameplay Quest works fine as a PC headset.

I prefer my Index of course, but the Quest is less than half the price and the Quest 2 one third!

I'm sure all new games going forward will have cloud saves, so it shouldn't be an issue with the newer, bigger games.

Older games need to be updated for cloud saves though. Superhot just added support in an update for example.

There's an unconfirmed rumour going around that Oculus will have a 'firewalled' Facebook account especially for VR (They could call it an Oculus account ), which should fix a lot of the issues. Facebook are supposed to be announcing soon exactly how Facebook accounts are supposed to work with Oculus devices. (They apparently hadn't worked out all the details...)

I have a small budget to buy some games for the Quest 2 when I finally get it sometime after October the 19th.

Just wondering is there any games that are a must have on the Quest 2? I should ask this question a different way. Are there games that are much better on the Quest/Quest 2 than a PCVR headset?

Any game that can make use of roomscale or the ability to dodge or move around is much better on the Quest than PCVR, due to the lack of a cable. Even with the drop in visual fidelity and framerate.

My current favourite is In Death: Unchained, which is a bow and arrow rogue lite. It was great on PC, but with room to move around and physically dodge it's amazing on Quest. Considering the low power of the Quest, the port is absolutely incredible and improves on the abandoned PC version in quite a few ways.

Fitness games like FitXR (Formerly BoxVR) and Thrill of The Fight are much better without the cord.

Also a lot of Quest 1 games are getting upgraded visuals for Quest 2 and will be worth a buy.
