Well on my girlfriends Tv she has Sky, and a lot of the channels switch to 4:3 and they should all be 16:9. I have the picture output set to 16:9 on both the TV and Sky box. Anyone know how to sort it?

Not all channels, or even all programmes are broadcast in 16:9. Even with the Sky box correctly set, it will still output 4:3 in certain situations. The UKTV channels for example, don't broadcast anything in 16:9, whether or not it was shot in said aspect ratio. Sky One will output 4:3 when the Simpsons is on, and 16:9 when 24 or Lost is on.

What you'll need to do, is set your TV to one of the stretching options (Superwide or similar) while viewing 4:3 material if you don't like the borders at the sides (personally, i prefer the borders). Once you've done this, you should get true 16:9 where appropriate, and your chosen stretch method on 4:3 programmes.
