Question about council tax

My girlfriend is as uni and has just moved into her own flat and as a full-time student, she is exempt from paying council tax. A few days after she moved in, she received a form from the local council asking for her details, but there was nowhere to indicate that she was a student, so she just attached a separate letter to the form and sent it back.
She has now received a council tax demand saying she owes around £800
Is there meant to be a separate form that you are meant to fill in to inform them that you are a student?
I dont remember having to do anything when I was at uni, was too long ago:D
Cheers.

She needs to ask her 'School' for a council tax exemption certificate. They will issue her one which needs to be sent to the council.

There is (well there is on mine) an area for stating that you are a student.

First time this happened, i had to send a copy of my enrolement card. But get the certficate from the school office, they deal with this kind of stuff all the time.

HTH

What she needs to do is go to the registrar's office at her university stating she's at that uni and what course she's doing with an official stamp on it. However they'll know about this and most likely have a template letter that they fill in her details.

Then she needs to go the council and present her letter and they'll strike her off the list.

Kinda what I said!

Yup. :) Unfortunately I didn't submit before you as I got distracted with something else. Otherwise I'd have been in there before you and you would have repeated what I had said ;)

Freefaller has it spot on (did Oracle say something?!?!)

Email/visit the registrars office and ask for proof of council tax exemption.

In my case (loughborough Uni) they posted me a letter that litterally said..

"I hereby confirm PeterNem is in attendance as a full time student during academic year xx/xx/xx to xx/xx/xx on course: xxxxxxxxxxxxx"

It was dated, and had the University logo stamped on it from an ink stamp pad.

The local council - a true example of an efficient, money-saving, friendly, helpful and understanding government run agency. If only more businesses could follow and exemplify this fine working ethic - the world would be a better place.

if you get to here and still think i'm serious then there is nothing more that can be done for you.
