Question about HD555 Sennheiser

I'm considering buying this headphone but I have some question to someone who owns it.

  • I wear glasses, is it comfortable enough to not have bleeding ears after a few hours?
  • At the moment I do not have a sound card other than my crappy on board one (probably some realtek thing) Will it be enough for this or not?

Hope someone can help me in my choice. Also if this requires a soundcard, could anyone tell me which one would do the job?

EDIT: Almost forgot, I'm a Drum and Bass DJ, I won't use this headphone to mix of course but I'll listen often to the sound, are the bass okay with this one?

1. I have the HD555s and wear glasses, the headphones are so comfortable that when I first got them I almost destroyed the plug by getting up and going to walk off as I didn't realise I still had them on. Very useful in the winter as well as they keep your ears nice and warm :p

2. You'll notice a big difference upgrading to something like the Xonar D2/D2X, I'm not a big fan of onboard sound due to all the dodgy interference and stuff you get with it. There's no reason to rush out and buy an £80 soundcard though, they'll sound decent enough from pretty much any source, but to get the most out of them you should move away from onboard.

I also wear glasses and can keep the headphones on all day, extremely comfortable.

I would recommend a sound card. I have a Creative X-Fi Extreme which is excellent sound quality but the Vista drivers are not particularly good.

I've seen quite a few recommendations for Asus Xonar DX2.

I would recommend an X-Fi (minimum Xtreme Gamer, Xtreme Music or Titanium - not Xtreme Audio) over a Xonar with the HD555s. The soundstage is better suited to the X-Fi's headphone virtualisation than the Xonar's.

If you wanted to go down the Xonar route (and use Dolby Headphone) something without angled drivers would be better.

can you do a little test for me please?

if it is onboard realtek sound, do you think you could play a FPS game, cod4 ideally, and see if they are good with position.

Also, hows the bass on them?

One last question, are they stereo, or 5.1?

Bump!

The sound quality is fairly 'tight' for the first 100 hours, then it really starts to get good.

Not just 100 hours, well tightness yes but the bass improves months/years on!

I purchased mine on 22.07.2007 (!) and the bass goes very low now, only just realised how low and detailed they go after listening to some tracks I've not listened to for a few months and do not recall the bass being this low before - there's a definite kick that wasn't there before even though they were great before it's just all round better now!

Plus they look like new, well apart from a hairline crack on one side of the headband but that's nothing =]

I've had my NAD C325 almost as long too to power them with \m/

They are definitely better with a soundcard - but you should still hear an improvement without one.

Also - since the phones are open some of the bass is lost - in my opinion it wasn't anything to worry about - but your ears may tell you different.
