Question for all Samsung LCD TV owners (preferably R87 series)

I'm interested in this LCD TV to use both as a TV and a PC monitor (maybe even simultaneously). This will mean that I won't have to buy a seperate speaker setup. So I was wondering.. how is the sound on it? Also (I can't find it on their site) but do they all have Picture-In-Picture and if so what is that like? (I think Picture-In-Picture is when you have for example TV on full-screen, and another source like PC or pictures in a snapshot in the corner playing simultaneously).

I have the Samsung LE26R74BDX, and it is the series before the R87. Yes it does have PIP, which works very well for watching the TV whilst browsing, the sound on the series I have is pretty poor and doesn't go that loud and also vibrates when turned up load, but I find it works very well for normal use e.g watching films and TV but music isn't that good. I'm not to sure if this has been fixed in the R78 series or not though.

Thanks for the advice. Can you adjust the size of PIP? And also can you use 2 PC sources for PIP? i.e. play a game full-screen, and have your desktop as the other picture?

The PIP is one size but you can have it at 4 positions around the screen as for showing two PC screens, no you can't.

I have a LE26R87 which i have had for the last week or so.

Audio: The volume range seems to be on a scale of 0-100, I normally run it at 15 which for general watching sounds fine. I've just run it up to 50 and even at that level I found it too loud and didn't notice any problems. That being said I have read things that say the sound is not good and its best to hook up external speakers but I haven't seen that in my usage so ymmv

PIP: I haven't used this yet, (and unfortuantely my Dads borrowing my spare VGA cable so I can't just try it now). I suggest you download the user guide for the above model from Samsungs site and look at pg23 of the pdf (equates to pg21 in the hard copy). This tells you what you can PIP with what interface wise. It would appear that you can change PIP size from this but not if you are using PC as the main input.

I was about to get the R87 but on the avforums people have posted that samsung are being cheap and not using S-PVA panels and instead CMO?!

I don't know what to do now, because people say there is a big difference and that the CMO panels are pretty poor.

If you already have the TV you can tell what you have by looking at the serial on the back of the TV. If there is a C after the model name and R then its CMO, if there is an S after the model name and R then its the correctly advertised panel.

I've got the R7 series and the sound is o-k. As good as could be expected from such a small space I suppose. I demand old TVs with their good built-in speakers!

If you're worried about space, price etc then pick up some Acoustic Energy Aegos - great-sounding 2.1 system for only £90 or so :)

too big for a PC monitor really, 22inch monitor is ample

Was going to ask actually, is it really too big to be used as a PC monitor?

I was going to get the new r87 32" to use as a pc monitor, 360 screen and for HD movies.

Hmm the quality of that shot doesn't look too good. Or maybe it's just the camera.

I was looking at getting a 23" which just about fits my budget and space.

Ok, I've looked on the back of my LE26R87BD and the model listed on the back is:
model: LE26R87BD (R) S

(there's actually about 1.5inches of space before the S but that get eaten by the forum). No C's at all on the various fields on the label, (that i noticed)

Mine was from a large multinational online competitor, (so obviously I can't say who), and was not just the cheapest place they are available from.

Yeah, you've got a good one :)

I take it I should be browsing in the jungle right? ;)

Edit: Argh! I can find the 32" version for the same price, but not 100% on what panel I'd get.

:D

I did consider getting a 32" version as as you say the price difference is negligible but the space I had for the TV would have been to small for it, (the 26" version just fits).

Fortunately I didn't see all this stuff about panels until after I got the TV otherwise I'd have probably been umming and ahhing for months ...

Next step is to do lots more overtime and oncall so I can replace my pre-R7 generation Samsung 26" LCD in the lounge with a 40" M86 model :)

My 32R73 had a CMO panel.
Its been sent back to Dixons, waiting for them to send me a R88 now.

Neocon - Keeping your R74 that clean is impossible

One more thing before I commit to purchase this - what cables do they supply? Is an HDMI cable supplied?

Oh and also, do the sound on the speakers mute when you have a headphone plugged into your PC for example?

Only cable I had with my R87 was a power cable and this agrees with the packing list in the manual so no HDMI cable is included.

I would not have thought that the TV would mute if you plugged in headphones to the PC but the PC may mute the audio output when headphones are plugged in which may have the same affect ... but that would depend on your PC configuration.
