Well, the title is a bit misleading because this isn't the question of the century but it got you looking :D

I currently have an xbox and have just bought a playstation 2 to go along side it.

I purely bought the PS2 for 2 games that aren't out on xbox lol.

Just wondering what people think -

Xbox Vs PS2

Simply put, what do you think is better and why.

Personally i think the PS2 is better for actual gaming, but the xbox has more capabilities such as being able to install linux onto it etc...

Your opinions?

Andy

If you put quality titles next to quality titles then the Xbox absolutely blitzes the PS2. I would type more by my friend is asleep next to me and the rattling will annoy him!

Id say you got the two consoles the wrong way around. You cant install linux on an xbox officially but you can a ps2. Its a bit pointless to even argue it, all 3 systems have plus and negative points. They all have quality games that you can only get on one format. Its just down to money imo, Id have them all if I could.

as a console the xbox is much better in terms of spec and abilities, though it did have a year on the PS2

in terms of games, titles that are multi-platform will look better on the xbox, however for heavy heavy gamers id say the PS2 offers more in terms of games.

So it depends on what type of gamer you are.

I just think its funny how PS2 fanboy went on and on about the size of the Xbox, yet the PS3 is bigger i believe :D

I think it all depends on the games you want to play.

The only console I never bought (and I played it a fair bit as I used to sell import consoles far before the uk versions were onsale) was the PS2, I can't say it didnt have good games, but for me the only reasons to own a PS2 were the GT games, GTA (for the initial span of exclusivity), Devil May Cry and the Metal Gear Solid series.

I think the GC and Xbox had lots more to offer, but it is all down to personal preferance, so I don't think anyone can ever be correct in which console was the best (apart from the Atari Jaguar, which sucked in every respect:p)

It's a bit of an ambiguous question this one. If you're asking which is better out of a PS2 or Xbox, the answer quite simply is Xbox. It is better specced, so is obviously the Xbox.

However, it's never as clear cut as that, as each console is generally judged on the merits of the games available for it. This is where you get such a varying opinion. To my mind, the exclusives you can get on the Xbox (Ninja Gaiden, Kotor 1+2, Jade Empire for example) are better than the exclusives you can get on the PS2, which makes the Xbox the better machine for me.

I'd say Xbox every time,

The Controller S is much more hand-friendly for me than the PS2 controller, not to mention the analog sticks are actually usable, along with the decent analog triggers making it far better for driving games. Also the ability to have 4-player games without an additional peripheral is very useful.

Any game on the PS2 that is on the Xbox looks and sounds better, and loads faster, not to mention the hard drive for custom soundtracks is a cool feature, as is the virtually unlimited savegame space!

Also I should add that I've realised recently the power of the Xbox is quite impressive, some of the games coming out at the moment look an extra degree better than their PS2 counterparts, while the PS2 runs it like a dog the Xbox seems to manage quite well.

Not that I'm bashing the PS2 I'd add, it's a good console when you consider how long it's been around, I never really took to it though.

Xbox hardware > PS2 hardware
Xbox peripherals < PS2 peripherals
Xbox Graphics > PS2 graphics
Xbox sound > PS2 graphics
Xbox controller > PS2 controller
Xbox game range < PS2 game range
Xbox aesthetics < PS2 aesthetics

But what about game quality ~J~?
Game range and quality are different!

I don't really think it can be answered TBH. The quality of the game is down to the game itself. The FPS's are far and few between (and a lot more involved) on the PS2, but the driving games are an abundance on the Xbox because it handled them better.

So if you're a racing games fan, the game quality is better on the Xbox than the PS2, if you're an FPS fan, the PS2 is better, GTA is better on the PS2 than the Xbox (sorry, but it is!), but Splinter Cell would have been rubbish on the PS2 because of lack of live.

So it's a real difficult one to answer really.

Huh? The only good FPS it had was TimeSplitters! whilst they were amazing, none were as good as Halo!

GTA3 and Vice City were better on the PS2, but San Andreas was head and shoulers better on the Xbox because it required too much of the PS2!

I'm bamboozled by the FPS comment though :(

The graphics and sound are definitely better on the XBOX, no question. Especially sound; plain old Stereo (with maybe a bit of prologic) vs Dolby Digital 5.1 is no contest.

The XBOX also has more potential in the form of XBMC etc. and also XBOX Live! sounds like it's better than the PS2 Online "effort" (never used Live!, have used PS2 Online)

The PS2 is better for me though as I prefer the controller and games (SSX3 on XBOX was graphically better but the controls were awful compared to PS2).

I've been through 2 xboxes (bought cheap off a friend), I sold both on because I wasn't interested in the exclusives on the xbox and didn't really have the space or need for two consoles.

You'll never get a definitive overall rating of the console, but the xbox hardware was definitely superior, even if that meant putting it in one hell of a big case.

edit: Halo was also the biggest disappointment ever; I tried to play through it but it was just sooo dull (IMO)

O I don't know, Project snowblind was a cracking game, Time splitters, Area 51, they just seemed 'better' on the PS2.

Hard to describe, but the only thing I can think of is that the Xbox, as I've mentioned, was technically better and had the ability to do so much more than the PS2, so when you played the FPS games that were made for both consoles, you 'expected' that bit better on the Xbox.

Can't agree with you on San Andreas though, again I think it's down to the expectations but I was so let down by the Xbox version, seemed sluggish and not all that polished.

I think it's also down to personal taste. You mentioned Halo. I hate it, think it's vastly overrated but I know some people think it's brilliant. Second sight for the PS2, I loved it, but I know some people hated it.

Like I said mate, it's hard to put a finger on it, but I just felt a lot more comfortable laid on the settee with the PS2 and an FPS rather than the Xbox, especially after I'd seen some cracking looking and sounding games on the Xbox, I was just left wondering "what a shame".

Shall I get mi coat! ;)

Xbox controller > PS2 controller

Havin a laugh aint ya :p

I always preffered the ps2, however I guess thats because there were never any games that tempted me over to the xbox, I was close with fable..... then it came out on pc :)

Theres probably a coupla games for it I would enjoy but not buyin a new console just for a few games.

PS2 = Mad jap games
GC = Mad nintendo games
Xbox = Needs more mad games :p

out of the newer consoles the Revo is what Im looking forwards to most. Nintendo always please with their games and Im sure they'll keep doin....

Only question, why has zelda been delayed ? use controller as links sword on revo? ooooh

Come on you cant really add xbmc and stuff to its list of merits......
You can run the same sort of stuff on a ps2 just not many people have done as they all had their souls eaten by M$ ;)

abit off topic, away i think it depends on who you ask :( , some say you can use it in mini games (Nintendo of EU) , like fishing in the game, some say its for gamecube controller only (Nintendo of USA).

Heh. I wagoing to say almost exactly the same thing, but far less succinct than that. ;)

I was never too sure about the Xbox at first, but after having some proper time playing on my housemates when he moved in, I've definitely warmed to it. It's got a load of great games for it, and I've enjoyed loads of them (as said, the driving games in particular are unmatched by any other console), but it does just lack that variety that bizarre random japanese developers seem to bring. It needed more interesting and unique games before I could really consider the Xbox an excellent console. That, and for a four-player console, the Xbox really lacked a good selection of offline multiplayer games. The GC trounced it in that respect, which is another shame.

Well, it's never going to get answered properly, as one answer cannot show the opinions of millions of gamers out there.

Personally if I were to choose, Xbox.

Better games, better controller (Controller-S anyway), 5.1 Dolby Digital, more powerful and overall better graphics, and Xbox Live, Superb DVD playback, built in memory, 4 control ports.

Not going into detail as it's already been said.

Not owned a gamecube, but that would probably lie between Xbox and PS2 for me after seeing some of the quality games you can get on it.
