Hello,

Quick bit of advice needed. I sold on ebay my old laptop last week to someone who has 0 feedback and from the email discussion I have had with them they sound foreign.

They purchased the laptop on buy it now and the money was sat in my paypal account straight away. I thought the best thing to do was to withdraw the funds to my bank account while I waited for the new hard drive on the laptop to arrive (I told them it would be a few days because of this).

Now, today I have just received a message saying I should cancel the transaction as he is going on holiday and no longer wants the item. This is fine with me as I didn't explicitly state the laptop was ready to go (the new hard drive is to protect my data and also give the laptop a kick for the new owner). However where I am unsure is on the status of the money which has been sent. If I do a refund now on the listing, is there anyway, if the guy did happen to be a fraud that I could lose the money which is currently on it's way to my bank account.

Should I just wait until the money is sat in my bank and then set-up a refund on the account?

Any advice would be useful, I am leaning on the side of caution and will wait until the money is in my bank before I set up a refund.

Dont send the goods, Wait until money is in your account & then do a refund.

Maybe speak to paypal about your suspicions first just incase.

Close paypal account, its not safe:(

The person who has bought your item has accepted the terms and conditions of payment for an item which you are going to send to him.

You can make them wait up to a week for the item to be delivered and by that time you will have had the funds in your account. As you say, you did not say that it was ready to go straight away. One thing you will need to watch is that you did not state you wanted to install a new HDD first before sending the item. Even then, he can only get grotty about slow delivery as in theory, you are actually exceeding his expectations ;)

It doesnt look at first glance that you are doing any wrong tbh.

Sorry, should clarify. Did state it was going to have a new HD in it. To be honest he doesn't write his emails clearly at all and I can't be dealing with the hassle.

Will just sort the refund and get it re-listed :)

before you refund him:

Do an eBay 'NPB' (Non Paying Bidder). Select the option of "We have both agreed not to complete the transaction" (or something similar - you will notice it in the options).

Tell him he needs to agree to this before you refund him.

Once he agrees via eBay, refund via PayPal.

That way if he turns around and tells paypal/ebay he never received it, etc you have the backup that via ebay he agreed that you both agreed not to complete the transaction.

Cheers for the advice, will do.
