Hi all.

After my pc dying horribly on my this week i've been planning a new rig but also one for the missus, she has no patience and wants it now! So without much time to reaserch a new build i've thrown this spec together....

I already have a nice case and power supply

Monitor

OS

gfx card

HDD

DVDRW

cpu,ram,mobo bundle

Currently coming in at £592. There will not be any overclocking or mega gfx hungry games going on, so really i'm looking to see if i can improve this build in any way with keeping the budget? Or if anyone sees any obvious problems with this lot.

Thanks Guys:)

Any reason for a DVD ROM over a DVD-RW?

You could probably get a better combination of RAM, CPU, motherboard by getting them individually.

e.g.

Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
(£49.34)

Abit IP35-E (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£64.61)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB22GB6400C4DC)
(£43.46)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
(£17.61)

Total : £184.72

Eek well spotted on the dvd, like i said i was in a bit of a rush! Do you think the cpu i chose is overkill for a non gaming machine?

You think the gfx card is ok? I've always loved the nvidia stuff and looking at a 8800ultra on mine in a few weeks:D But any thoughts about if there is an ATI card better for that value?

Thanks

surely no need for the aftermarket cooler if he isnt planning on overclocking?

I just put it in there to accompany the e2160. So you can get it up to 3ghz if you want.

For around the 70 quid mark I would get an x1950 Pro myself. but if non-gaming then just get whatever is cheapest, with dx9 at least and 128mb of vram for vista aero glass.

Any core 2 duo would be fine for a non gaming rig, clocked up, those e2160 hold there own against their bigger brother chips (see sig)

This is great, thanks gents. I'm checking out the X1950 pro atm. I was a little hessitant about ATI tbh, i guess i'm just an nvidia fan;) But i have seen a few posts about the comparison so i'll go with it unless anyone thinks different? Is there anything to consider with ATI cards, hardware ect?

This'll be my first new build for 4 years, can't wait actually, i reckon things have come along way since my socket A build!!

The Arctic Freezer 7 does not fit on the Abit IP35-E motherboard.

I know because I bought the same setup. ;) The motherboard heatsink blocks it.

I trust this is still open for debate? Im currently making a spec. But a little stuck on a cheap amd motherboard with good things for her. I found one with 7.1

You see if your not overclocking then go AMD. They are better value for the clock speed. Also you dont need an E6600 if you arnt gaming.

Get the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz. Its cheaper and by far fast enough for day to day use.

I ment to put in a 320gb but it appears i put 250gb in as i just noticed. But does she really need more then 250gb? Why spend more then you need to?

Ill get back to you with a full spec, still looking through motherboards.

:EDIT:

Ok then, im done. Now she doesn't play games right? if she does i will have to switch a few things around.

Shes not a gamer so doesn't need a powerful graphics card. If she plugs it up to a tv or projector might bump it up to a 2600. The reason ive gone for 2400 over the faster dx9 cards is because it offers more for a non gamer. The faster dx9 cards are only good for gaming.

The reason for going amd is because its faster and a lot cheaper then amd and is perfect for a non gamer.

O and i think i just saved you 100 quid :)

On a side note, get the GTX over the ULTA. The difference isn't huge, by the time the GTX is being chalanged youll be wanting a new card as the ultra wont give enough fps over the gtx.

P.S i for one know the motherboard is 10 quid more expensive then in... other places... ocuk is not the only shop in the world remember. And its amd boards are very limited in choise.

Went with the original gear i put in the post, build went very smooth. Man they make building easier by the day:) Had a few probs with the dlink network card but just sorted that!
8igDave, your prolly right about the cores i could probably have gone for an AMD with this build but i live in hope that one day the g/f will do some gaming with me...... unlikely i know ;) I think it's worth looking at the bundles as far as cpu, mobo n ram goes. i have a lot of faith with ocuk and i trust there expertese more than mine!

Thanks for all the help gents, will be building my pc in a week or so, thats gunna be a beast :)
