My mums car has been written off by some idiot lorry driver. Prior to the accident she had spent around 400 quid on repairs and servicing. The insurers are denying any claim for this since it would not affect the value of the car. Should we be expected to get compensated for this extra cost, or are we screwed?

Cheers

the work didn't add to the value, might have made the car easier to sell, but it doesn't effect the value.

Well when the insurance company do pay up you will be paid for a full working condition car, so the repairs and servicing are something you have just paid out for the car to be working and in good condition. Therefore by spending 400quid you havent really increased value but just extended its life in the eyes of the insurers so you wont get anymore than one that hasnt just been serviced.

Basically its just bad luck, but dont accept the first payout.

I realise that. But due to an accident that was'nt her fault, she has been put out of pocket.

Edit: ah well, the entire insurance system is a complete scam anyway :)

Well not really because when she gets the payout she can go and buy a car that has just been serviced and repaired or hopefully one that doesnt need repairing and in a better condition.

agreed

just because servicing your car and spending money replacing parts doesnt increase its resale value

doesnt make the insurance industry a scam.

Thats it, blame the trucker!

I'd love to know the other side of the story. - What happened?

As for your repairs, tough I'm afraid.

Did you want a refund on the fuel in the car as well?

Servicing is classed as routine maintainance to keep the car in a workable order and will never be refunded by the insurance company.

the car was parked in a car park. the guy in the lorry reversed into it

kinda hard not to blame the trucker :)
