Quick nood Q, is an X1900 just an overclocked X1800 or is there more pipelines etc.?

Which people have said should give it a boost in shader intensive games. Is this why ATI is outperforming Nvidia in Oblivion ?

Probably, but they can also do AA+HDR at the same time, which Nvidia can't.

Yeah but not with playable framerates as far as I can tell.
Many have said that with 4xAA and HDR its really slow in outdoor areas. And unplayable.

However the in game screenies look nice shame they are getting 12 fps lol :p

i run oblivion fine with 2x AA and HDR 1280x1024.

2x is about all it can handle. but its fine.

obv got no high end nvidia card to compare it with but its smooth enough

is 2x AA ok with HDR at widescreen resolutions?

I get sweet framerates with a tweaked ini. The default ini is very poor for performance.

1680x1050 2xAA 8xAF + HDR

With the default gridstoload 5 I get 27-40fps outside (x1900 over xtx speeds). For me changing resolution or AA/AF hardly makes a difference on performance. But a tweak to the ini can get me an extra 10fps.

If I run at 1280x960 I only get an extra 2fps avg....

I run at 4 x AA and 8x AF with HDR at 1280 res. Frames aint fantastic but they are more than playable. I dont realy notice them dropping. Lowest is about 25 ish out doors 35 average max 60. not sure in doors, aint checked

AS many people have said before Oblivion isn't the fastest game in the world so framerates in the mid twenties can be acceptable.

also bearing in mind the game has had no patches yet or tweaks by the dev or a dual core patch etc then this has to be taken into consideration i guess

ok, here's another noob quextion coming from the back, what does AA and HDR and what do they do?

i'm guessing AA stands for anti alising but i thought nvidia cards have done that ever since the geforce 4

HDR = high dynamic range, its basically light effects, take a flat marble surface, when the sun hits it, its reflects in a glossy kind of way similar to glass, its those kind of effects that you get, rendered in real time.

for an example of what HDR can give you, download and run this
http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/archives/rthdribl_1_2.zip
everything you see is rendered by your card in real time. now any card beyond a GF3 can do this direct HDR, but only modern cards have HDR instructions woven into them to allow them to use HDR functions in game engines.

when you couple AA + HDR you get beautiful textures with less jagged edges basically. the problem Nvidia cards have had is that there AA functions have always sucked at the best of times and they cant do AA + HDR which is why people say if you want raw power, go with Nvidia, for image quality you go for ATI.

personally i go where ever my wallet can go at the time

Id say its just an overlcocked x1800, only difference is it has 48x shader units instead of the x1800's 16x.
*cough* R580 gpu in X1900 versus R520 in X1800 *cough* ;)

Even on an X1800 I can still use AA + HDR and 8X AF and it's still perfectly playable even outdoors.

At what resolution?
At what settings?
Settings on max in the game?
What frames are you gettting? (playable) is a bit vague.A figure would be good.

Maybe happening for some people, but it ain't unplayable for me at those settings ;)

Framerate drops to about 25-30fps in large forest areas, but most of the time it runs between 50-60fps

More than playable for me :D
