Ok bit of background info:

My gf is needing a new car very soon, her little ford ka is coming up to 90k miles, still runs okish, however at the last MOT there were a few advisory regarding rust under the car. My car is still going strong, however could do with a nicer car for the commute.

There is a chance we could get away with 1 'decent' car and keep mine as the work horse. And the one car we both like (well i find acceptable) is the 1 series.

Seen a few 130i go for around 14 - 15k with quite a few options - http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1236836.htm.

Now the funny thing is as soon as we started thinking about this there was a series of 5th gear & top gear shown on dave and both mentioned about the cramped space in the rear. Now we usually only have the 2 of us in the car, however 2 - 3 times a year we make a trip down to essex to visit some old friends, and we take the gf's mother and partner.

My question:

In real world ownership is the rear leg room really that much of an issue? Would you compare it to say a fiesta / ka in the back?

Thanks

For only a few times a year it isnt that bad. You would want something bigger if you had people in the back more often though(saying that it isnt you in the back).

Do they fit without being done physical injury?

If yes, purchase 130i. If no...

Are they contributing towards purchase cost?

If yes, purchase something else. If no, purchase 130i.

Yeah love the coupe, but just isnt in the price range or have the engine option.

The 1 series is a love it or hate it kind of car, I think the M sport in 5 door looks really nice.

space in the rear is rather cramped, but you're going to have 3 in the back on a regular basis, so i think you'll be ok :)

They don't do a 130i Coupe and you can't get a 1 Coupe of any sort for £14k.

Good idea other than that though :p

Balls to it all, 135i on finance :p

edit: don't they do like a 128i coupe or something similarly close/oddly numbered? Or did I dream that?

I dad a 06 118d from new for a year from new. Solid car, good mpg.

Back seats are a little cramp tbh - but I did have my seat nearly all the way back. Front passenger footwell is very deep IMO so a rear passenger might be more comfortable on passenger side.

Boots alright - I never had a problem getting a couple of suitcases in it.

Mine got a remap - £50 - nice performace boost - might be worth a look if you cant stretch to 130 but want a bit more poke

As a 130i owner, long distance in the back on motorway is fine in my opinion. Although I wouldn't recommend more that a couple of hours on bumpy B roads as it can be a hard ride, especially in the back. If you have the front seats right back you may struggle too. I'm 6'1 and had 3 6'+ blokes in the car the other day for a 30 mile journey. No complaints at all. :)
I have no regrets in buying mine. The engine noise still puts a smile on my face every time i hit the loud pedal.
Incidentally I had a look at the one at Cramag the other day. Nice example and the NAV is a nice to have too. A bit £££ though. I paid £11,995 for mine in July. Same but without NAV and only 30k on the clock.
