Quick question re: filling a car with fuel

On a Fuel injected car i don't know if it would work, the system needs the cap on the generate pressure in the system, as for safe, i dunno, try it and report back :p

Thought the fuel pumps drew in and threw out the fuel from the tank.

They do, they dont pressurise the tank to get fuel pressure. The engine wont stop running its up to you if you think its safe though.

i do this nearly every time i fill up as the car runs on a turbo timer after i take the keys out, i have never been told off and never had any problems

I had never though of that before.

TBH its one of those things where it is an increased risk but a minute one. Just don't go splashing it over the exhaust for a laugh :p

*having said all that I wouldn't do it.

We all know that using a mobile phone whilst filling a car is extremely unlikely to cause an explosion.
Unless you were very, very unlucky you can happily smoke while you fill the car up.
So filling a car up while it is running shouldn't cause any problems at all.

However....
If there is just the smallest chance that by doing something that really doesn't gain you anything could cause something to go wrong is it really worth the risk?
With the engine running you've got a hotbed of electronic systems etc not physically that far away from the filling pump and working away.
Sure petrol is running through the engine anyway, but still.

Also surely the only reason you'd want to leave the engine running whilst filling up would be for a "fast get away" - planning on doing a fill-up and drive-off?

Noticed the amount of vapour coming out of the cap whilst filling earlier, wouldn't catch me filling with it running, and definetly not smoking

It also means the engine is running while you go in to pay, meaning some wee scrote just nicked your car with its fancy turbo timer.

The whole point of a turbo timer is so you can leave it running securely, and take the keys with you ;)

And before anyone get this in...

Once the timer has counted down, it shuts the engine off and in most cases arms the immobiliser/alarm... thus stranding the thief in the middle of the road, in a locked car with the alarm blaring...

:D

That'd work so well with deadlocked doors!

Right.

I suggest you look up turbo timers, maybe on wiki.

Done. :o Okay scrap the turbo timing cars then, bad example.

If you leave the engine running in any other car without a fancy turbo timer then its free for the wee scrotes to nick it. ;)
