I am planning to do a big wash/polish/wax of the car now that I have time off work and I was wondering about grabbing some of this Quik Clay (link)

I already have the 3 stage system (paint cleaner/deep polish/wax) so is it worth getting the Clay as well as using that?

Personally I'd say it was a waste of money. Clay barring is great for removing surface contaminants but this product is badly packaged in that the clay bar is very small so you'll only get 1 use out of it(I can't recall if there are 1 or 2). Also in the box is a spray applicator of quick top up wax which although handy isn't really why you were buying the product.

Personally I just use something like autoglym tar remover to remove contaminants such as tree sap, bug splatter etc before polishing and then waxing.
 
Some people swear by it, personally I didn't find that it really did anything because both cars I've tried it on had good paint to start with.
 
I just used it on my car yesterday, and it is definitely worth using. It takes out all the surface contaminants and my bodywork is now as smooth as a baby's behind (apparently they are quite smooth).
When you open the clay, cut it into 3 pieces, dont use the whole bar. If you drop one piece, get a new one, as it will pick up every bit of grit on the floor.

The Detailer (not top up wax) is there to moisten the panels before you rub the clay onto it, because if you dont the clay wont glide over it, it will just stick to the panels.

Autoglym tar remover is rubbish and a waste of money, it wont remove bug splats. If you want to remove tar spots your best of using a very small dab of white spirit, but you must make sure that you wash the area immediately after you have rubbed off the tar spot. Just dab some on a cloth and rub gently till it dissapears. The tar remover will not remove oxidisation marks either, where as the clay bar will. Its the best product I have used on my car.
 
I bought some of this yesterday from Halfrauds... OMG its awesome. I am going to join the "swear by it" club. I thought my car was clean, use the decontaminent clay heavily lubed with the spray and it takes off so much crap you didnt even know was there. On the main panels such as boot bonet and roof it came away with loads and LOADS of yellow stuff (the pollen from europe) and this was straight after a wash :eek:

This followed by NXT waxing is definitely 4tw. My car never looked so new and shiney.
 
I agree, it's great stuff. Made my car look so shiny even before the polish+wax, and the paint is smooth like glass now :D
 
Clay bars are a great bit of kit. The good thing is, you only really need to use them 1 to 2 times a year, or unless you are really hard core you could buy some of the Sonus ultra fine clay and do it more often.

Also, if your car hasnt been clayed before, you will notice that when you use the clay, the car will shine more just from removing the surface contaminants. I clayed my ST this afternoon, although it is a brand new car, it still had some bonded crud.

Oh, and if you want some lubrication without buying little bottles of Quik Detailer all the time (about £6.99) then you can buy some Meguiars 'Last Touch' which is about £23 for a gallon (US i think) and all you do is add a bit of water with it.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. If your Clay Bar is too manky for using on the paintwork, you can the use it on your wheels.
 
Sorry if I came across as saying it was crap, that wasn't what I meant. What I was tring to say was the packaging of the product was crap and it may be better just to buy the clay bars seperately as I felt it was very expensive for just one bar. The detailing spray or whatever it is isn't necessary as i'm sure the instructions claim you can just use water with a bit of car wash in it to lubricate just as well.

Hmm haven't found this myself. I use it one the lower doors where the tar and crud build up. I apply it and leave for a minute and then wash off. Some stubborn marks do take a small ammount of rubbing but it's very easy. All in all I find it a great product and it's fantastic for cleaning up old wheels, I had a set where I used about 3 different brands of wheel cleaner and all were useless whereas a cloth dampened with AG Tar remover took most of the crud off with a single wipe.

But I agree white spirits will probably do the same thing.
 
I think it's an excellent product and would recommend it to anyone. Just make sure you leave a day to do it all, as the whole process is very time consuming!

I used it on my windscreen - damn impressive. Whats impressed me the most after decontamination is that the dust doesnt stick to my car so much any more. Cant stress enough how good this stuff is.

The clay while small can get a lot of work out of it. I expect it to last as long as the bottle of spray, the bottle of spray itself is damn useful, leaves a nice polished shine as its also intended for quick detailing for those "emergency polishing jobs" :p 4 hours from 7:30am sunday morning while there was still shade to do the whole car and NXT wax.
 
If you keep buying the quik clay kit, it will work out expensive in the end. You can buy what is called Meguiars 'Last Touch' (1 US Gallon) and then you can buy 2 clay bars ( i use Sonus Grey, come packed in two's) It'll work out cheaper in the end.
