R-7 1800X vs i7-8700K vs Threadripper > Gaming + Streaming/Video Editing

Budget is no option, assume I have £2000 to spend on a CPU+Mobo combo.

####

Thanks for all the suggestions and banter thus far ;D - Round 2, Fight!.

Suggest you up your budget :p

Mountain Mods dual case.
7900X + X299 mobo
TR 1950X + X399 mobo

circa 3K + additional GFX cards and memory

No fight, no contest.

Gaming First > Streaming/Video Creation Second

Wait till the HCC Intel's are released to see how well they review, as at the moment Intel does seem to have the lead on the gaming front but Streaming / Media stand point TR looks to be the better choice. However, if you doing all 3 it's where the choice gets into muddy waters as technically there isn't a bad choice as this is the beauty of competition.

I'd say for a gaming first system id be looking at a binned 10/12/14/16 core Intel depending on the bin, that's if your budget allows for it. However, the TR is also a monster platform as well and shouldn't be over looked.

I will be binning 10 16 and 18 only I think. Already the 4.8 7900X I binned are out of stock and we sold a 4.9ghz chip with one on pre-order too.

All X299 and Z270 binned CPU's are with delid on OCUK.

Hahaha i'm not about to go installing a dual system just to satisfy both options! :p

I think I've decided on the i9-7900X ... i think, I'm still hovering over that Threadripper button though :|

However, the TR is also a monster platform as well and shouldn't be over looked.

This is exactly why the choice is so hard! - damn you AMD for actually producing a worthy competitor to Intel!

So you bought the i9? or TR? you don't seem too sure :D

They are almost similar money (at the time of posting).

I haven't actually "bought" it yet... but i'm going for the i9-7900X :) finally made my mind up, I saw some more bad press on Threadripper/Ryzen based on optimizations and stuff, so I'm going to play it 'safe' and stick with the more mature intel architecture plus the higher clock speed will be nice.

Honestly if I had the money and the use for a 2nd machine i'd just buy both as Threadripper still sounds like an amazing CPU!

Great thread. I'm in the same boat, though CPU is less a factor for me - it's more that my X79 platform is very limiting. I'm prob going Threadripper though, depending the super-expensive CPUs coming out on the 25th.

Glad you made your mind up! it's always a tough decision. I think some of us here are lingering around seeing what other's thoughts are on the matter, as we want new CPU's too! :D

I was watching on YouTube a video on AMD's master plan (AdoredTV if you're interested), which made for an insightful perspective. AMD are invested in the console market, and consoles of present now being x86 means potentially games released on the console, will more likely be optimised for AMD on release for PC during porting. So "IF" the master plan is in any way true, then an AMD gaming seems like an attractive way forward for me. Not too keen on VEGA though.

And also Intel's negative press for AMD "Gluing Desktop CPUs" didn't sit well with me in their promotional slides for the upcoming new range of Xeons. These are the kinds of things that influence my decision, because I'm silly like that :D

but i'm going for the i9-7900X :)

I've pretty much come to the same conclusion, as i'll be going down the i9 route with the Asus Rampage VI Extreme. I've not completely decided on the core count yet though but a binned 7900X is my current front runner. As for my use case, the i9 is a better fit.

So i'll be kicking off another updated build log once OCUK have stock of the items.

A surprising number of people fall for Intel's marketing, if not directly a lot of idiotic and lazy writers and reviewers simply copy and paste Intel's marketing.
It always makes me laugh when they bang on about how AMD are not optimised, and then publish documentation of how to Optimise X299 and its exactly the same way you optimise Threadripper. so by optimising X299 you're optimising Threadripper... :D

Lucky for those among us who know better we are not in the minority. Threadripper is actually outselling Intel's X299, and rightfully so, its faster, cooler and more power efficient.

Long live competition. Intel could do with some of AMD's Glue :D

Project Water 3.0? I just had a read through your Project Water 2.0 build log, very nice black and white system you made there! ;D

or maybe 2.5 :p:D

Thank you, I need to get around to updating that thread to be fair as i've changed a few bits since the last update.

I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your builds. Im in the same boat, still deciding what to get... Im going to japan beginning of October i wont make a decision until then. Matter of fact i might even get the CPU there as i believe its a little cheaper...
