Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Using scaling from 390X vs Fury X benchmarks, it'd put the RX 480 slightly below a 390X. Would hope it beats it come release and driver updates and in the hands of someone who wouldn't bork his card on a live stream.
Wouldn't be the first performance bench that puts it just a tad behind a 390X.

I dont think drivers are going to magically make it significantly more powerful in just a week or so, but I do hope that in general gaming performance, it can match or beat a 390X in most cases.

None of that matters, at all.

AMD have pitted themselves directly against Nvidia with a mediocre card in a price bracket that's very current.

It doesn't mater that a few developers go on twitter and say AMD is better at DX12 and VR, even those potential buyers who read that and agree would still go for the 970 because its a proven Nvidia card and AMD have allsorts of problems.

The DX12 and VR arguments are abstract and distant to most people, its not relevant to the vast majority, they don't give a crap.
All people care about is how much do I get for my money and how reliable is the brand.

Right now AND or Nvidia you get the same for your money and everyone knows not to touch AMD unless there really cheap and you don't mind driver headaches. <Not my words, that's the whole internet.

AMD needed to do something that was actually disruptive, something attention grabbing and irresistible.

what they have actually done is more of the same.
Well I don't know how I can compete, seeing as you speak on behalf of the whole internet :p

But I still disagree. AMD needed to put decent performance in volume parts. They've exactly hit that brief with Polaris and they should reap the rewards. It's hyperbolic to say they're now the go-to chips, but with both Polaris 10 and 11 they've given volume purchasers a HUGE amount of capability, so you could say that's disruptive by itself. The world (and indeed, 'whole internet') doesn't revolve around just the ultra top end.

Which makes it about the same as a 980. For £180-£220 who would complain except Nvidia devotees. Overclock the 480 and it will be more than good enough for most 1080P gamers.

The 13.9k score was overclocked, he went to OC it more and bonked the card!

You could see him OC'in it on the screen. Doesn't seem like an overclockers dream at all.

Yup pretty much, that's why they are going to go under before this decade finishes. They have looked like amateurs for decade in the CPU space, now this amateur form has carried over to they GPU division.

Their GPU market share now must be less than 20% yet they bring 3rd revision of their 290 card and call it a day. Small Vega is months away and when it comes with will probably just barely match the 1070/1080 that will be on the market for months. I wonder who is going to buy small Vega when most enthusiasts have already spent their money on Nvidia.

AMD can count their lucky stars that Nvidia is pricing their cards so high. If they didn't AMD would be dead and buried. Still don't matter, they will just go down more slowly. Their Zen CPU will also disappoint, no way these amateurs will outperform Intel.

You can only last so long in the technology space without breakthrough products. Really wanted to buy AMD GPU, but going with Nvidia. No point even waiting for small Vega.

I don't understand why AMD have been falling so short....

I remember back in the day my first ever pc I built AMD were all the rave. People used to trash Intel. Now 14 or so years later. AMD seem to be a running joke.

390X and 980 pretty much trade blows as equals on average. Really just depends on the game. I'd say if you consider games as a whole and take into account that performance summaries(that I'm sure you're referring to) often throw in a generous amount of DX12 titles, the 980 might well be the better card still. At least at 1080p and 1440p. And undoubtedly better when you consider overclocking potential.

But yea, agree totally that a 480, even without overclocking, should be plenty for most 1080p gamers. Hell, I hardly have many complaints with my 3.5GB GTX970 at that resolution.

WFFC tech saying the dude did the stream as a teaser apparently. No mention of borking but it looked like he did in the stream tbh.

Someone needs a hug :(:D

The 1060 reckoning

In which case I might be wrong again, AMD might not get 2 days in the Sun.

So, the 1060 had better:

  • have Fury-Nano performance at stock
  • overclock all the way up to 980ti performance
  • cost no more than £250

Anything less than that and it's an absolute total disaster, because these are reasonable expectations, right?

I don't see how a reasonably expected 25% price drop for 390X level (and likely a tad more) performance isn't improved perf/£ - on prices that are already reduced to clear stock and are more than competitive on price/perf to the nearest competitor the 980.

It's a new generation on a new process. You think the best they can do is give us the same price/perf we got with 28nm?

You don't expect a new generation to do better?

Oh sure, it's small and uses less power. If that's your sole consideration then they've done well, I guess.

I mean, yes. This is exactly what we should expect from a new generation and node.

We should be getting at least 50% more performance per £.

I would happily have a card that's double the wattage and double the performance :D

Not for me! Still loving the 8GB version.

But my degree in Zoology tells me that the pack sentiment may be shifting a little this week... just in time to shift back to full love again next week.

Haha, spat my tea out then.

Will be a great card for the money.
