Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

So this thing isn't even faster than a 970?! I've waited a long time to purchase this card, but if that holds true, count me out! A second hand 390x or 980 is the way to go then.

If you want cards that are EOL or second hand then buy one now

the RX480 made these cards obsolete and very cheap ...You should be happy

I am so torn...
Always loved AMD stuff - used them for years. Got an R9 280X and want an upgrade... was holding off on the 480 as I was considering the 1070 (but the price is making me sad).

Now - going from an R9 280X to a 480 will probably feel massive to me, but I want to get a solid 60fps @ 1080 on High (dreaming, Ultra) settings - but feel this may not be achievable... or if it is, before the end of the year games will be holding me back.

The other problem; my processor. I have an i5 3570K @ 3.4Ghz which is water cooled. I don't overclock it (damn, it's been 15 years since I last did overclocking). So that'll be a bottleneck for any card I get... but I don't want to upgrade my motherboard, cpu etc too

So what do I do?

I don't see how people can't decide between 480 or 1070. It's not even the same category, its $400 vs $200 GPU.

It's like thinking whether to get a 960 or 980ti.

I think for most it's a price/performance thing. Some people, myself included, could easily put down that money for a 1070. If the 480 provided better value though for it's price it would then become tempting to go for that. Going off early benches it seems 480 has not at all redefined the price/performance. It is seemingly same price and same performance as straight after the gtx 1070 launched.

I'll await more reviews but it seems that AMD have done another Bulldozer... all the hype and its competitive in a few benchmarks.

Good to see nothing changes with AMD. :D

Overclock your cpu it easy. Plenty of guides about to show you how.

Hmm, i'm going to wait for a few more reviews without the Nvidia specific bells and whistles turned on before I decide. Will 8gb make a decent difference in high resolutions though? I have a zotac 970 at the moment and am interested in VR so was looking at 2 480s but maybe think a 2nd 970 could be a better route now, but 8gb vs 4gb hmm.

No? Have you ever seen a GPU review before? You dont ONLY show it against equal priced cards. It's useful to see where it stacks over a product range.

And it's very good to know how it holds up against cards £50-100 more or so so people know whether that extra money is worth it or not.

I hate to use this term, but you're sounding quite salty at the moment.

Not really salty. Look at my specs. I don't know why anyone with a 290-980 would have been considering this card in the first place. never hyped about it, had nothing invested in it being good or bad.

Of course it's fine to see a product stack, but people need to keep in mind something. This is a reference card designed to be cheap with a cheap cooling solution. Wow it doesn't beat an AIB 970? People were acting like it was beat by a 970 for less/equal price. That is not the case in this review. Just pointing something out. :)

EDIT: I mean look at the clocks on the EXOC- 1500 Mhz!

Yup, me too (last nV card was 460).

AMD do not deserve to stay in business, if the absolute best they can do is match last gen's perf/£ on a brand new process.

Poor show.

Do you fully think through what you think let alone what you say?

You do realise the market has adjusted to the node jump already. Nvidia initiated it. By your own standards both AMD and Nvidia do not deserve to stay in business due to price/performance against last gen cards when looking at today's prices.

I am also reasonably sure (but feel free to argue otherwise) that neither AMD or Nvidia have control over the exchange rate.

Interesting thing there is how well the 480 did in games like Fallout 4 and Creed with Gameworks on. It was a good bit better than the other AMD cards there. Also he benched the new Total War game at DX11, but Tomb Raider with DX12. Odd choice

So I'm going to wait for more reviews, to see what the overall performance is.

i also thought it was oddhow it beat the 970 in rise of the tomb raider and batman, both nvidia games. i think some work on the drivers is needed

lol, AMDamageLimitation mode engage!

The 390, which performs better than this pile, was £240 for the last 6 months or so.

Try again.

Another thing that many people seem to miss - those graphs make it look like the difference is massive but when you look at the numbers we see in some cases 40vs 45fps vs a 980. 100vs 110fps. 64vs 60fps. In reality you won't even notice the difference. If game is unplayable on a 980 or 970, it will be just as unplayable on a 480 tbh. We're talking 5-10% across the chart.

Yep. People look at graph bar size like it means anything. Wow, 5fps!

Some good news aib partners say that with custom coolers they can reach oc between 1460 and 1600. Which means amd again put a ****** cooler lol this company is destined to fail with this kinda management
