Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Will wait for more reviews, but from what I can see, this card performs about the same as a 290 but has the benefits of 14nm making it more efficient. I expected 390X performance at the very least :(

Well, at least the hype train comes to an end.

Will stick with my 1070 pre-order and wait and see what Vega has to say :D

personally i would advise not using that animated gif due to the amount of people killed just a thought

It's exactly what they are doing, they even said it. But people were expecting some miracle mid range card that was going to compete against the 1070. I just think people can't get their heads around the fact that AMD are hitting the value end of the market first.
No man, that is not it.

I just explained it all to you, but you're going off again at how people are being unreasonable. At this point, hardly anybody truly expects 1070-level performance. But they also weren't expecting the performance we've seen shown so far to be so low, either.

My god - what a disappointment...

You know what's even worse, doesn't seem to have been any improvements in how they perform in DX12 games. So while AMD had the advantage before, Nvidia have bridged the gap slightly with the 10XX cards and AMD have not responded but continuing to widen the performance margin.

It totally matched the 580 in anything remotely new at the time. And was LESS than half the size of the 580 die.

And I'm not saying I expected a two tier jump in performance this time. I'm just putting into context why the jump we did get is disappointing. If it's going to take a good, 3rd party cooled 480 to even match a moderately overclocked 970(cheap 970's could boost to 1317Mhz), then we're really only talking a very minor improvement in price/performance over an 18 month old card.

This needed to be at least 390X levels of performance out-the-box to be noteworthy.

You probably need to remember that Nvidia fixed their truly horrific performance/mm^2 with Kepler. There was a reason AMD's 4870 at 255mm^2 came fairly close to the 500+ mm^2 280 and beat the cut down 260 easily. Nvidia used to have truly horrific efficiency, like embarrassingly awful efficiency. Fermi maintained that lacking efficiency with a 334mm^2 5870 very competitive with the 480/580gtx again which was again over 500mm^2. Kepler finally and for the first time in a very long time had broadly similar performance/mm^2 compared to AMD. So comparing 580gtx to 660gtx and assuming every generation will offer that performance gain in that small a die by comparison is insane.

Nvidia fixed their efficiency deficit, AMD didn't have one to begin with and Nvidia can't do it again.

Think about it, if Nvidia had a similar die size/performance gain then 1080 would be FAR far far more than 20% faster than a 980ti.

The GTX 970 offered better performance than the GTX 780 Ti for much less money and it wasn't the only card in the range. The GTX 980 spanked everything else on the market at that point. Also the the GTX 780 Ti was only a year old, so I wouldn't really be complaining if the RX 480 offered Fury X performance for 350€. But the 290x is how old already? Almost 3 years old, and the RX 480 cannot even manage to beat it.

The point is why release something that isn't even faster than your last gen products available for the same amount of money? 290x is still the better buy. They could have just lowered the Nano price to 300€ and it would have been a much much much better buy.

780ti price at 980 release was less than a 980.
You can't compare release prices for one card and non release for another.

Also, the 300-350 card you're talking about is 490. 480 is 160-200 card, it's 960/380 replacement.

£175 for the 4GB version is GTX960,R9 380 and R9 380X level pricing - and that is a massive bump in performance for the price.

I find it hard to believe a respected youtube hardware reviewer releasing a review with rubbish drivers?! He will use the correct drivers.

Sorry if someone won't say what drivers they used and also broke NDA - I find it very suspect - I don't care if he's supposedly well respected - either list what you use or deal with your results not being trusted....period. I've done reviews in the past...either you make it bullet proof against these questions.....or answer then honestly not avoid them......He's avoiding answering....

guys chill the **** down he didnt use press drivers but old ones

he never got the press drivers because he never signed any nda thats why he could release the video now
