These cards are aimed at bringing VR to the masses, AMD have gone on record to say this, this 480 in particular is aimed at bringing the cost of VR down. A side effect is they will also be a brilliant card at the price point for enthusiasts.
Its another AMD move by trying to steer the market, they are trying to get VR costs lower to get the uptake on it higher, this i imagine would have a knock on effect of uptake on their LiquidVR platform etc, anything that can ultimately boost sales of their products down the line.
Its not no, but thats its main purpose.

is there any proper benchmark for 480 yet?
Why didn't they just release a 490?

They will. It just likely wont be Polaris. I think most people expect Vega to come early 2017, so it's not far enough away to do a whole new line, calling everything 580/590 and whatnot. If there's only one Vega GPU, it will probably take the 490/490X range. If there's two Vega GPU's, I'd guess that the smaller will take the 490/490x naming, while the bigger flagship will get its own moniker ala Fury/Titan.Why didn't they just release a 490?

They announced the Fury and 300 series in the event last year IIRC. Could be very interesting.
Main purpose is to brong VR ready performance graphics card at affordable price.
yea it could be a paper launch at E3, then reviews embargo lift 29th june.
House brick for $199
With Vega coming so close behind Polaris, this comment only makes sense if by 3-4 years they mean one of their custom silicon design wins (PS4 Neo, X-Box One: Scorpio etc.). Those are going to be fixed for a few years. PS4 Neo and Sony spending big on VR makes the most sense. Polaris on PCs just means having an advantage porting games over.Main purpose is to serve a market that by this point is tiny compared with the 40million or so discrete GPU's sold each year?
Its also a bit worrying that AMD are saying this is a product to serve thay market for the next 3-4 years. I would have hoped for advances in the next 2 years, not the next 4.
He's trying to say the card is going to be so damn solid, you could build a house with it.What was the purpose of this comment?

Pitcairn has been around for 4 years and is still in the currant AMD line up, so it is not unexpected for Polaris 10 to be rebranded for the next few years.
