Just how long do you think it would take before all the speed cameras were taken down if we all simply kept to the speed limit for a few months?
There certainly wouldn't be any new ones added (no dosh) and with the cost the maintain the existing ones, I'd guess they'd get pulled fairly quickly too.

Just how hard would it be for us to do that?

I don't understand how so many people get caught. You have to be really special to get done when for most of them you get plenty of warning.

Minor problem....the various police forces in charge of the enforcement would realise that as soon as they come down we will all start speeding again.

Innovative idea though :).

You get no warning on mobile speed cameras.
And it's easy to get done by a gatso if you are in an unfamiliar place and trying to navigate or distracted some other way.

Tsk tsk, shouldn't be breaking the law then ^_^

Reminds me of the cycling threads, some laws you don't care for as long as you think no ones watching...

wouldn't achieve anything, speed isn't causing a meaningful number of accidents anyway.

I care about road safety, so this is the key pointless

I was under the impression that the cost to maintain them isn't huge anyway. They are in a box which is designed to be left outside and should be reasonably weatherproof. For the older ones, changing the films however often, and repairing damage and the newer ones are digital I believe. I don't think the existing speed cameras would get taken down unless you're talking long term (several years at least) as leaving them up would cost nothing and if speeding started to creep back up again then they could be brought back in to use more cheaply than it'd cost to install them at new sites.

How hard is it to stick to the speed limit? Its pointless getting rid of them would probably cost more money than they bring in from the few they do catch.

Yes I agree some speed restrictions in places are ridculous but other than a few most are set accordingly.

I mean the fixed ones. I don't think it is easy to be honest, most people have their Sat Nav on in such a scenario which warns you and even if you don't have one they're still pretty obvious. Also they're usually in places where you shouldn't be speeding anyway. I actually wouldn't mind whatsoever if speed cameras were only found in 30mph zones. It's other areas where they don't belong and cannot be justified. I've even seen them on motorway junctions which is damn right dangerous.

Because they hide behind big ****ing signs!!!

I was recently informed that I was exceeding the speed limit. They insisted that I was doing 70 on a 60. The thing is, I was in a queue of traffic because I remember it clearly, it was start stop traffic all the way and there is not a chance I was doing more than 45mph at any time along the road. The evidence has so far not been forthcoming and it all smacks of the scamera partnership lying to make some money, which is what I'm sure they will do even when people stick to the speed limit.

I can see how you get caught by the mobile vans that use the laser(?). Sitting on bridges over dual carriageways/motorways and usually have already seen you as you see them!
