SO, i was supposed to be shopping for the girlfriends birthday present on Saturday and just so happened to pop into a Gadget Shop. Among all the usuall stuff they had was this massive RC petrol (NOT nitro) RC car that was about £775 (I've since found it online for £640ish)....Needless to say girlfriends pressie was soon forgotten and i got talking to the guy about this car!! :D

Anyone got or raced one of these things (HPI Baja 5) ? Are they as easy to maintain and run as the guy trying to sell me it was making out (poor in unleaded fuel and some oil and away you go!!)?

I've also been looking at some cheaper alternatives as i don't think i could justify that much money for a toy. XRC seem to do some ready to race buggies around the same size for about half the price....are they any good?

Have you considered a nitro? RTR Savages can be had for half of that price :)

Petrol RC's are easier to maintain but cost a fair bit and I'd personally look into an FG if I was going petrol.

It's a great hobby, shame my savage hasn't had more than one gallon in it though :(

you can get a banged up scooter and race it for that price

I could also spend that same amount of money on chocolate but wouldn't change the fact i want an RC car !! lol :D

I had thought about nitro but it seemed a lot easier using normal petrol plus the cars are supposed to be easier to maintain :).

The HPI Baja is a fantastic piece of kit. Petrols are far far easier to maintain than nitro's, and a damn site cheaper to fuel once bought. A gallon of nitro will cost you around £20, how much is a gallon of unleaded plus a dash of 2-stroke oil? £1.20 at most.

If your interested in a petrol model, then FG also do similar models, but also Monster Trucks which look fantastic.

Well i had a savage and it was great, but nitro is £20 a US gallon and tuning the engine was a pain in the rear.

I bought myself a FG Monster truck in may and havent looked back, petrol is dirt cheap, so is the 2 stroke oil + 45 mins run time and i have yet to break a part and its had a fair bit of abuse!!!!! The baja is supposed to be very bashable but i dont like the look of it, i'm more of a truck person.

You could go for a FG marder clone, most of the parts will fit, or go for something which looks just like a baja 5B?

Baja 5b lookalike = £299 ready to run!! http://www.sbracing.co.uk/latestnews.html

FG marder clone = £299 RTR look for one called a mutilator 6, i cant find it at the moment as i'm at work but will find it later.

Any other questions just ask or email me (in trust)

Here is my FG MT in action with a friends...

I think you'll find a gallon of unleaded is about £4.30 at the moment. Oh I wish it was £1.20!! Your point still stands though.

Thanks for the advice and info JAMAL, really like the look of your monster truck!!
I like the look of the buggy's although having seen that truck of yours i certainly wouldn't say no to one of them !! :p

Saw the title and thought it said radio controlled pests:p

Anyways both my younger bros were madly into these radio controlled cars a few yrs ago...spent a lot of money on getting the top equipment but then they lost all interest in it. Mind you they werent into the monster trucks but rather the buggies ie proper racing ones that you see racing on a dirt track. I think all in all they must have spent a fair few grand on their hobbies. My middle bro then moved onto radio controlled helicopters where he flies them in Canada for his local club if im not mistaken.

£1.20 for a gallon of unleaded? Where? Please tell me so I can buy lots and lots of it!

Meanwhile try nearer £5 for a gallon :p

Petrol are far better cars than nitro (toys imo) also have a FG Leopard...
Sounds like the bloke doesn't have a clue, you're supposed to mix it first, not petrol + oil in the fuel tank.

Checkout hobbytek in Germany.

RX with failsafe and 1:4 servos is a must.

Woah JAMAL, How cheap are those petrols! Anyone on forums like MB got any yet?

You on about maxbashing mate, if so theres a pretty active petrol forum on there now but with you being well into rc you prob know all that? Petrol seems to be taking off in a big way now especially now there are sub £400 ready to run for some models. I got mine for £495 off ebay boxed new unpainted with 1/4 scale hitec servo and battery which was a real bargain, i got lucky!!!!

BTW this was my savage the parts are on ebay now, wabash wheels FLM bits etc...

One thing some of you may not realise is how big these things are so here is a pic with an xbox 360 pads for comparison

Seem to remember someone telling me that if you are using petrol for anything other than a road going vehicle there is a way to claim back the duty... I did intend to research this but haven't got round to it yet on the account of, the fact that my lawn isn't huge and a gallon keeps the mower going long enough that its probably not worth the effort!

JAMAL,

Yeah I meant maxbashing. I am a member there, lol, just been out of the hobby for about a year now so a bit out of touch. Was looking at a petrol before, can't beleive how the prices are coming down.
