It's been a while since I've been out with my camera so with the forecast improving slightly this week I stole a day out in Wales.

I was hoping to get snow covered backgrounds for my photos but the only snow was on the very peaks. Although it did snow four times whilst I was there!

On to the photos...

First up was a bit of a suprise, an ex-RAF Jet Provost (back story on my site)...

The second shot shows how bad the morning was weather wise! Good job it was painted white.

In the afternoon, a pair of Tornado GR4s made two passes.

Cracking shots there mate! Is there some sort of schedule for LA7 or do you turn up on the offchance?

The Goldstar sure is painted prettily :) I appreciate it varies, but how many planes would you normally expect to see Gord? I'm in the planning phase for a trip in the new year, but its going to be the best part of 5 hours to get there from down here. We will probably end up b&b'ing - but I was wondering how much activity we could expect on a typical week day?

Thanks for the comments guys!

Excellent pics as usual. Do ya reckon they know they are being pictured?:P

:)

None at all. There is a schedule for the tatical training area LFA 7(T) that is posted up that some people mistake for being a schedule for LFA 7. The two areas are not the same thing.

The only thing you can be sure of is that they don't fly at the weekend, the rest is just chance.

I'm guessing your Devon way?

It's 3.5 hours (one way) for me. Makes for very long days.

The number of passes (I say passes as each aircraft should make no more than two passes over the same area in each sortee (for noise reasons) so you get aircraft doing 'laps') for the day I was there was about 20.

That was considered quite a good day. The number of passes has dropped over the years due to operations overseas (one reason the Harriers are now a rare sight at low level) and budgets. I've not had a blank but they do happen. I can think of two days in the last two years where I only got one aircraft all day. I can also remember a day almost three years ago when I had almost 50 passes!

Keep an eye on the aviation forums and the NOTAMs that posted. Big exercises generally mean less traffic. Kite flying, helicopters dropping stones onto the hills for paths and sheep dog shops will all mean that the area will be marked as an 'avoid' by the RAF.

Jesus guys, I'm sure I could find somewhere for you to stop up this way! I'm near Newtown, but the missus' nan and grandad are near the elan valley, much closer....take me with you, and I'm sure we could accomodate you, they live in a b&b type place anyway....

Thanks for the offer 3dcandy but my parents live a reasonable distance away so I can always crash there. The issue usually is having to go to work the next day forcing me to do the long drive :(

Well the offer is always there boys and girls...this is something I will be doing next year, just need to increase my lens count....not hard as it stands at....1!
