Random thought brought on by the tyre thread... Tyre age, and insurance?

Your average joe on the street would have little to no idea that tyres ideally have a shelf life and would only go on tread depth and possible cracking sidewalls but even that may be pushing it.

I would hazard a guess to say that most tyres wear down in tread before the rubber ages/perishes. If there's no law to stipulate the age of the tyre, then it's probably something very hard for an insurance company to challenge you on.*

*assuming that the tyre doesn't look nackered with cuts/slits in the sidewall.

The Government are already banning tyres over 10 years old on PCVs (buses) and lorries. They have so far only consulted on banning car tyres over 10 years old.
Is a 10 year old Michelin better than a new Landsnail tyre?

Assuming it was a decent Michelin to begin with, some in here would say no, I say probably as long as the Michelin still has some give and hasn't gone hard as a rock.

I wonder if tests have been done to find out...
