[Rant] Seriously, getting fed up with Nationwide trying to block my card.

Heh phoned to complain, dude tried to shout me down and explain that it's just the way it is. I'm quite calm on the phone as I know it's not the operator's fault but the guy was very rude. Once I insisted he disconnected the line.

Taking my business elsewhere.

I told them when I went to Russia on a business trip and had no problems. Spent around £1200 whilst there in about a week (not including hotel)

Not sure about larger amounts, maybe if you are buying diamonds, tvs and cars then it might get blocked. I'm sure you can just tell them you will be spending a lot and the blocks will be stopped

Id rather have my card stopped and someone ring me if there are a lot of high value online transactions, than not be told

I've had it a couple of times with Lloyds TSB. Whilst I appreciate they are trying to prevent fraud from happening on my card it can be bloody annoying and I can't imagine how frustrating it'd be if it happened as often as it seems to for the OP.

I had it a few times when I started using Lloyds, I seem to have somehow trained their system to realise that ALL of my transactions are unusual and unpredictable so they don't block it any more!

The Verified by Visa thing doesn't even ask for a password any more, it just flashes up and then closes again, I guess it must recognise my PC or a cookie or something?

Halifax have only done this once to me, and it was indeed a fraud - it was in Brazil iirc. Other than that, I travel all over the place in the UK, buy random things online and randomly put through large amounts without them batting an eyelid.

Halifax do the same with me.

No matter how many times I've tried to buy things through just-eat or Steam, they always block my transactions and give me an automated call the next day. I have to use my Nat-West credit card instead. I can understand if they were small niche markets, but both are fairly large companies.

I wouldn't even consider using my debit card abroad. Twice I informed them where I was going, and twice I was unable to pay for the hotel. Pretty crappy really.
Never had any issues with HBOS ultimate reward. I buy things online all the time and use ATMs abroad without hassle.

Got a credit card with M&S for some reason(family card) and that gets blocked constantly, my Barclays and HSBC cards have always been fine, never get blocked, no problems with either. I can see where companies want to get ahead of the fraud but there is a point where the card/service becomes useless. The amount of times M&S blocks a transaction that is something I do several times a month, but won't block the one off things I do is a joke. Basically some of the banks just have incredibly stupid software that seems to ignore the customers usage pattern completely.

All the recommendations for HSBC are missing the point.

The OP wants the cheapest way to spend abroad as part of the account.

Nationwide offers this, my advice would be to get a Halifax Clarity Card to use as backup if the Nationwide card gets blocked, as it also gives you the Visa exchange rates without the bank adding anything.

It's not as easy as "change bank". I have Barclays and this happens to me a few times a month.

Are you doing multiple online transactions at one time since they have a stupid process in place where they automatically block the card if at least four cardholder not present transactions are made in a 24 hour period (I actually had that hit me and only found out about that little known process once I went to the bank to find out what had happened).
